are you allowed to use your cell phone while working?

work isnt that strict...its frowned upon to use it at your desk but if its a short call nobody really cares. most people walk outside or to the breakroom for a call. nobody seems to care about texting and such, just have the courtesy not to allow it to interrupt conversations with others.

Yes, nobody cares. Obviously it would be inappropriate to whip it out and start texting in the middle of a meeting or something, though.

I am constantly on my phone, either texting or playing games at work. I can't stand the guy I work with though.

Yes, I can pretty much do whatever i want at work as long as its at my desk, out of my 12 hour shift im the only one in the building for 10 hours of it.

what kind of f'ed up place would not let you use that...

I use to work Pharm and we were not supposed to bring our phones in the work area due to the nature of our work. i.e. Corporate espionage reasons.

But even then we could have it in our lockers and such.
That and even the Fed Gov allows cell phones. Other than secure areas but when I go there its pretty obvious.

So yea I am curious what places do not allow; outside obvious reasons.

At least at my fed job, you can't have personal cell phones on the premise. It has to be a lock downed, no camera, employer issued cell phone.

we use them quite a bit throughout the day. most of our staff is in out of the office throughout the day, so the cell phone is the only way to keep up with everyone. Along with that, we work with contractors quite a bit, and i know that most of them have our cell numbers so they can contact us if a problem comes us. Nothing pisses 'em off like have a crew and several 100K of equipment idle while they try and track down someone to answer a question. Downside is that I will also get calls at night and on weekends, for the same issues......contractors with questions. It does help with the "relations" issue cuz sometimes we have to be pricks about the specs, so they accept it easier.

Where I work we're pretty much not permitted to bring anything more electronic than a quartz watch into the building, and even then it can only have limited data functions (ie: stopwatch lap memory at most). We can bring a radio or audio CD player, if it doesn't have a tape deck or the tape deck has been physically destroyed by an approved security official. That's pretty much it. They used to allow non-wifi MP3 players with a security official inspection and an authorized security waiver, though that got tossed out with our new security guy.

Phones are everywhere and pretty necessary to the process here anymore. Even during meetings fingers are flying, presumably answering emails. It's just one of those places where quick answers are more important than "manners" in a meeting.

My current job is not that strict, employees can use cell phones pretty much when they want, as long as it does not get in the way of doing our jobs.

Other jobs I have worked at had a VERY strict anti-cell phone policy. When you clokced in that the work day started, your cell phone was supposed to be turned off. If you were caught talking on your cell phone you would get a verbal warning and maybe even written up. But these employers were pretty much workaholics. We would work weekends, 50 - 70 hour work weeks,,,,,,,.

As long as it doesn't get in way of working.
If something arises demanding immediate attention, then cell phone use is last thing on mind.

What kind of work?

my cell phone functions as my work phone as im never at my desk. they recently relaxed the camera phone policy because they realized its near impossible to get one with out a camera now. More people want a work phone that's also a smart phone which was the driving factor behind that

Yes, definitely. I have one cell phone that is used for both work and personal reasons, and while I don't make a habit of addressing personal matters during business hours, it happens. Nobody cares.

Yep. My work pays for my phone and doesn't mind if I use it for personal either. I can talk/txt anytime within reason of course.

What kind of work?

Welding shops, we built ASME certified pressure vessels and heat exchangers. Its good honest work, but get ready to work your life away, especially if your working on heat exchangers. There were times when I did not get a way off for 4 - 6 weeks, and working 12 hour shifts

I teach skiing, it wouldn't be very professional if I started talking on my cell or texting in the middle of your $690 ski lesson! I still keep it on me, but onjly to make emergency calls.

Allowed?

Where I work people don't treat you like you're a child. You take calls when appropriate based on appropriate behavior and common sense.

We don't all work at McDonalds like you apparently do.

Sweet. CIA?

Just like most places I've worked - this place is fairly lax. A quick honey-do or pickup wife call is fine. Even heard some folks talking to their kids about stuff. Extended calls should go outside.

I worked in one place where they did not allow any phones whatsoever. It was because the CEO watched a guy take a call on his cell before picking up his desk phone (it was a call center).
