Are you allowed to stay at a airport overnight?

Getting there after 12am, flight leaves at 10am in the morning, can I stay at the airport overnight?

I've stayed in US airports for 8+ hour stretches, never been to that airport. I dont think it would be a problem.

At smaller airports they close down the terminals, in which case you have to go out into the main lobby area. I doubt that applies in London, but it happened to me in SpoCompton.

I've done it. My favorite is clearing customs when they see a return flight of less than 24 hours later.
Domestically I've done it numerous times as well. Airports are like ghost towns after midnight though......

Sometimes people have to stay overnight (eg: delayed flight/missed their flight).
We have fun TV shows where they follow airport staff around, and on numerous occasions people have had overnight stays in airports.
(TV show is set in either Heathrow or Gatwick, Heathrow I think)

Been through lhr at least a dozen times. Personally I hate it. And it is like a ghost town post midnight. I've only been there once "overnight".

Wear earplugs as the recorded public announcements never stop and you have nightmares about leaving parked cars out front, unattended luggage, and bomb jokes.
