Are you a new car or used car person.

I used to be a new car person but it finally occured to me why am I wasting money to make a payment on a new car every 3 to 5 years. A used car or driving a car after it's paid off may not look as snazzy as a new car but I don't really care. I'd rather save the cost of a monthly car payment.

My car has 2 payments left on it and I intend to drive it for another 3 to 5 years then get a used car that's under $5000 and drive that for 6 or 7 years. I figure it will cost me some money to keep the car in top running condition but nothing near what car payments cost.

What is your opinion on buying a new car vs driving a car for 8-10 years or buying a used one?

I don't know what the heck I am.

I know I'm NOT a new car purchaser; although for my driving habits leasing a new vehicle seems perfect.

But

If I was going to purchase, I would buy a used, older, but reliable, car. Something less then 10k if I was going to finance it.

New. 2-4 years.

Seeing as your the first to post new I've gotta pick your brain. Why do you prefer a new car. Is it prestige, reliability concerns, both, or something else?

I like the fresh car smell.

I like changing cars every couple years and I can't stand the depreciation, so I always buy older cars.
I don't mean cars that are like 2-3 years old. I mean 6+ years old. Drive it for a couple years, and sell it for about the price I paid for it.

used cars are a better value

i keep cars forever

i might buy a new car, only because used models of what i want are hard to find and generally go for more than a normal used car, so the hit vs. new is less than usual

My SRT-4 was my first new car...

I'd buy new again... I like knowing I'm the only person who has owned it, taken care of it, maintained it, etc...

I love new cars, but they really are not a good buy IMO. That said, I bought a new car.. because I generally want to just drive it until it's is not worth keeping. and I just bought a new car because right now, probably the only time i can. heh.

also, used car buying is a huge pain in the ass

Used so far.

First car was a Geo Storm, 3 years used. Work great until some a$$hat ran a redlight and t-boned me. I then bought a 8 year old mustang LX (the 4 banger).... it works but it wasn't to pretty, didn't do anything to impress girls, and have a few problems. Nothing too major in the time I owned it at least. Next car was a 2 year old corolla that I still own and have had for 6 years. Nice, economical car and did everything I wanted except impress chicks.

Now, I got a 1 year old RX8 that looks brand spanking new. It's awsome and I plan on keeping this bad boy for a few years and in like-new condition. It DOES impress chicks 🙂 So having a nice new or almost new car has it's advatanges that can't always be measured in terms of dollars.

Used, +10. My first car was 17 years old before I let it go. My parents old car. '86 Honda Civic it had 365,000 miles on it by then and only died because flood damage.

Used car, until it dies. This will be the pattern until I'm buying supercars as daily drivers.

And then I'll be buying new and keeping them until they die.

Edit: WTF, I thought I clicked edit.

I buy used usually really used less then $1k cars and keep them for a year or two till I get tired of it and sell it for almost what I paid for it. My current two are both 89s and I have had one for 2 years and the other for 3.

after buying my first car new, i doubt i ever will again, for myself at least. i'd never here the end of it from my mom and future wife if i bought them used cars...

I'm only interested in buying used cars (<$3000 so far), but I only had my first two cars for less than a year each before they died (or was rear-ended and totalled, in the case of the second one). Used the insurance money from the second car to buy a slightly newer very similar one, and I've had it for just about a year now. I'm planning on keeping it for many years, basically until it won't drive anymore (and the costs of repairing would be too much relative to the car's value). 🙂

Typically, I would buy used, but this last time I bought new. The resale on Civics is so high that it just made sense to go with the new car, instead.

I keep all my cars until they are no longer safe or worth fixing.

cars never die, they just stop working unless of course the car becomes mangled up and is just in peices, then it's dead, doubt any flood would actually "kill" a car.
