Hey, I even said in my original post "[Obviously this is just for fun, and maybe a little education too for the true n00b's (LIKE ME) out there!] "

I just made this because I know when I first joined AT (Anand Tech) a few months ago, I had no idea what some of the terms meant (and obviously still aren't entirely clear!).

And yes, of course you're right, SATA is an INTERFACE for hard-drives. Though you DO see it as descriptor for hard-drives so you can see where I'd be confused. So sorry about that. ;)

Regarding "pwned", I got my definition from THIS LINK and it says "A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

If it originated somewhere else, my apologies again.

And yes I do believe the answer to the last question is "D" -- the first two apply to gaming, and fast packet switching is something done in the tele-communications world.

Didn't pwned originate with starcraft?

The origin is debated, but there are two popular theories:
1) a misspelling within the Warcraft game
2) a misspelling by a well-known Quake gamer

Nobody knows which is correct.

Interesting. I was under the impression it started with the korean invasion in starcraft. Shows how much I pay attention. :p

Thats where I first heard it referenced myself. But I'm certain its been misspelled by many different people in many different games.

How do you guys pronounce the word pwn? Do you pronounce it like the way its supposed to be "own"? I tend to pronounce it as "pawn".

LOL no I don't use it in day to day conversation. If I did I would use the word "own", not pwn. :D

You say pawn, I say poon. Let's call the whole thing off.

I feel like taking a dump on this thread because it could possibly be THE most lame thread ever.

it is not challenging at all but rather pointless. either you enjoy using computer or you don't. why do everyone has to know them by their abbreviation?
much like OK = okay?
nite=night?
pron=porn?
noob=newbie aka beginner so wtf's up with that??? :p
owned=pwned??? or pawned
some of these punks on the block need to spell them right since I'm just going to ignore them ;)
btw, this is a neff thread and so I will not be making another post even if I am asked to.

Have a nice day everyone. I'm going to cool down in the basement for the time being, it's getting hot in the afternoon during the summer.

I realize some of you children think the world revolves around you -- guess what, it doesn't! If you don't like the thread then simply move on -- don't be a troll.

You kiddie trolls really take yourselves too seriously. Go get some sun, enjoy life, and maybe in a few years you'll outgrow that bitterness. ;)

SATA:
a. A type of motherboard.
b. A type of video card.
c. A type of hard-drive interface.
d. A follow-up test to the SAT?s designed to single out the compu-nerds from the rest of society.

SATA isn't only a "hard-drive" interface.

he said warcraft not wow

and i believe it originated in counter-strike without a doubt.

Also, what the hell is #10 supposed to be?

FPS is first person shooter, and frames per second, so is it the "all of the above answer" including that packet-switcher thing?
