What are you supposed to do, let the leader win?

k you have longest road right? 1 turn away from you and you have enough to upgrade to a city and win, everyone gives all their wood/mud to the guy whose turn it is now and they make like 13 road segments in 1 turn, is that cool and fair to you?

I asked this question last year and everyone said no.

Current favorite is Battle Cry. Awesome civil war game. It's great because it's only 2 players and I doubt I could ever find more then that at one time. I reccomend anyone looking for a good 2 player game should try it

I am trying to get people into Axis and Allies but again, the problem of getting 4 people around at the same time is hard as hell.

History of the world.... Those are the few that I remembered. :)

My ex college roomate's ex was into games like that... So I played with them....

My buddies and I have been playing Axis & Allies and Puerto Rico (excellent game) lately. I want to pick up Settlers of Cattan soon and then maybe Risk 2210 A.D. Maybe try out the Mage Knight game as well.

Oh and Boardgame Geek is an excellent source for reviews and stuff.

It might not be "cool" but it sure as heck is "fair!" I will repeat the question:
"What are you supposed to do, let the leader win?"

We can see that you're one point away from victory, and we can see that you've got so many cards in your hand that even if you get whacked by 2 Monopoly cards and the thief before your turn comes up again that you'll still either be able to build a settlement or a city, and your only weakness is the fact that you can lose the Longest Road.
Are we to say "Well, that was a nice game, Maleficus, and since you've come so close, even though we're all 3 points or less away from victory, we're just going to concede."
Of course not! We're going to team up on you and grab your Longest Road. And you know what? We're going to beat on the guy who steals it from you b/c now he's in a position to win.

Settlers is a social game in which you need help from other players to win, but you need to be independent enough of them to win yourself and not give them the victory out of generosity, fear or pity (or just plain foolishness!).

The problem is that Longest Road just isn't secure enough to win you the game, and you shouldn't rely on it. It's far too easy to steal a player's longest road. To truly assure yourself of victory, you need permanent points like cities and settlements, you can't get bogged down in "cutting off" other players. Having the Largest Army is a better idea because the cards are more expensive and you can only play one per turn, which means that if you have the largest army and everyone else has one less than you, then SOMEONE is going to have to play a soldier for 2 turns, by which time you'll have fun.

Additionally, resource cards that are worth points are your trump card. The other players see you as no threat b/c they have 8 points and you have 6 in a 10-point game. Except you have 2 points in resource cards. You will be able to get help from other players b/c you are behind, but as soon as you get the Army or the Road, you throw down your 2 cards and laugh your way to the bank.

In short, never sit on LR--it makes you a target. Instead, loom close behind if you can, then when you are ready to make a true move towards winning, in one fell swoop grab the Longest Road and/or Largest Army and any other points you need to claim your win.
If your gripe is that it's "unfair" to grab the Longest Road from the outright leader, then you need to re-evaluate your strategy and understanding of the game.

Good games...Age of Renaissance is what you're thinking of? My brother has a strange liking for starting games of Age at like 1:00 AM (it takes 7-8 hours!). That's a really strange game because there are these weird "mores" about which nation takes which territories at the start, and if some renegade player decides to go rogue and do his own thing it really F's up the balance. I played with some n00b once who thought he was playing Risk and proceeded to whomp on me from the start and not share the region with me (He was Genoa and I was Venice, or maybe vice versa). Instead he forget you have BOATS and instead spent the first 2 Epochs beating the crap out of me. End result: I was pissed at him for putting me so far in last that I spend the next 6 hours twiddling my thumbs, but he somehow couldn't figure out that the expense of his war on me put him so far in second-to-last that he was also going to spend the next 6 hours twiddling his thumbs. The whole time he just kept saying "You're closest to me, so you're my biggest threat!"
BLARGH DIE DIE DIE! I'm still pissed at him for that :D

Edited for better formatting.

Chess does count as a boardgame. The games I described though are of the GERMAN or import boardgame variety.

For those of you who want to start down this road of kewl boardgames

:)

Oh, and Maleficus I still want to hear your alternative to teaming up on the outright leader in Settlers :D

Why can't you just play Axis and Allies with 2 people? My friend and I always did.

There are quite a few online interfaces to play many of these awesome games including Seidler Von Catan (Settlers). I am here at work and I don't have the links handy but I know one of them is named something like Brettswelt or something like that.

You guys should also join the Spielfrieks Yahoo group. Many game designers participate in the discussions on that forum.
