Went to a restaurant with some co-workers. There were 3 men and 3 women. The waitress came over and said to the table: “What would you guys like to drink?” The waitress proceeded to go around the table and took everyone’s drink order.

Us men were at one end of the table talking about cars when one said, hey, come outside and look at the new wheels on my Charger. So us three men got up and went outside to look at his car.

The waitress came back and said to the remaining three women, would you guys like to order an appetizer? The women became outraged and said; we are not guys!

When did women start being addressed as guys? Isn’t the opposite of guys, gals?

If I was at a table with a bunch of women and the waitress said; what do you gals want for dinner? I would be offended, but somehow, the other way around appears to be OK when there is a mixed group of men and women?

Guys... people... interchangeable?

Suppose I do think of it that way. Only when you stop to think about it does it sound weird to address an all female group with it. Can we agree it works in a mixed setting?

because the males went outside to check out someone's car, are they no longer counted in the group? will they not be allowed to partake of the appetizers? the waitress could assume the guys would order by proxy through the girls still at the table.

correct conjugation in spanish for referring to a group of people that includes or may include 1 or more guys is masculine.

besides, if i am talking to a group of people, i will use "you guys" unless i am specifically calling attention to their gender.

I use it for both sexes being that I hear women refer to their friends collectively as guys, but as stated above, generally more for mixed groups. If I was addressing only women, I'd probably just say ya'll.

I generally want to forcibly strike people who take offense at a group of assorted people being called 'you guys.' None of my female friends give two shits. Nor do they even give consideration to thinking about maybe giving two shits.

The waitress should have offered pliers to extract the sea urchins from their vaginae to improve their attitude for the rest of the evening.

I'm guessing they'd only accept "You people/humans/humanoids" or a purely feminine term like ladies/gals/etc?

Are women guys? Nope...but when addressing a group of people, "you guys" can include the women in the group. No sense in saying "You guys and gals."

I personally use guys as gender neutral.

Just looked it up. When used informally, it actually does mean a group consisting of either sex.

This. The term "guys" is perfectly accepted as being gender-neutral these days. Except for these uptight biatches, apparently.

"guys" can be gender neutral these days. In the context of the OP it's completely acceptable.

If someone says "you guys", I get an intense urge to punch them in the teeth.

I actually know someone who is highly offended when the waitstaff uses the term "guys" when it's men and women at the table. Personally I think it's something to mean a group of people and has nothing to do with gender but some people are simply offended by it.

I've noticed this often on the internet (saying guys even if it's all girls) and it weirded me out since I am a native speaker of a gender-strong language.

Standard english doesn't have a plural second person so these weird constructions happen.
Y'all is gender neutral, much better.

Yeah, how about they do something about women living in true inequality around the world than their tiny egos if they are really oh-so-concerned about this.
