Are wireless mice any good for gaming yet?

My Logitech G7 works great as a gaming mouse.

Switching batteries in the middle of a game kind of sucks, but rarely happens.

They've been fine for games for a while now. Some used to have lag issues but that wrinkle seems to have been worked out. After 3-4 logitechs stopped working on me after a few months each, however, I went back to wired with a razer mouse which has lasted a couple years already and shows no signs of stopping.

I haven't really kept up to date with mouse technology last time I bought a mouse (an mx500 about 5 years ago) wireless mice and gaming weren't getting along to well.

I want to buy a wireless keyboard and figured if the mice work well I might as well just pick up a set.

My suggestion would be to get one with a recharger stand that you put the mouse into once you are done using it. Saves on batteries and headaches of switching batteries if you don't like that idea.

I had an MX700 first, and it was perfect, and the MX1000 is good too...

Pretty sure the 700 was out with the 500

I still use my MX700 for gaming however it is starting to show its age. Batteries arent lasting and the reception distance seems shorter.

Still, gaming-quality wireless mice have been around for at least 2 years.

Yeah but you get a warning 20 minutes or so beforehand and I can usually see the popup flash in the lower right hand corner even when I'm gaming.

I  my G7

I've used my MX700 for gaming for years. Loved it so much, I bought a replacement, which I use at work. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

They had both just come out, I was too poor to buy a mx700 and all the other wireless mice sucked.

G7 FTW! I love mine, though I did have the battery run out without me noticing the other day, luckily I was in safe place and my health was not compromised because of it. :D

I love my G7, comes with 2 rechargeable batteries, which is great, and they charge in about 2 hours, and they last a heck of alot longer then 2 hours at full charge, it's a great mouse.

edited for spelling

I had an MX700 for a while, worked great. But the batteries started to die on me after about 2 years of use. I replaced it with an MX1000 which I still have, which has been almost flawless.

Maybe if they were available. Much to my dismay, they quit making them a couple of years ago. I had to get a warranty replacement, and they sent me a MX1000. It's a decent mouse, but I don't like the high arch on top. I looked around on line and found some NOS, and bought a new 700 that way. I keep hoping they come up with a decent replacement, but I haven't seen it yet. I guess I'll have to make the most of my meager electronic repair skills in case something happens, and hope that Logitech comes out with something good before I need it.

The MX700 that I used to have had noticeable input lag as compared to the VX Revolution I use now.

The lag present on the older mice is for the most part gone. Yet even on the best mice that I've used, (MX1000 and others), there is a very, very, very slight lag that is really only going to be an issue if youre a pro gamer or REALLY competitive. I'm usually a stickler about such things, but its at the point where its juuuust barely perceptible, probably no worse than your LCD's display lag.

Some older mice like the MX1000 do have a significant amount of lag in my experience, but the G7 and newer mice have fixed that problem. I stick with wired ones though as I don't like the idea of having to recharge them every now and then, even if they have a charging stand.

What's they do with the forward button on the G7? That's my ventrillo button! (Not to mention forward for webpages)

At least with the G5, they came out with a newer version that has the forward button (but it's still missing the eighth "application switch" button from the MX500/700 series). Not sure about the G7 though.

I don't think the MX1000 lags per se. The problem with that mouse is it shut the laser down after a very short period of inactivity. It would then take .25 seconds or so to start back up. I never felt lag when it was kept moving. The newer gaming mice keep the laser on to prevent that problem, so they end up working better.

I am using an MX700 also and found that it works really well and for a long time if you put high capacity NIMH batteries into it.

A good game to test a wireless mouse in is Fable. Try fishing with a wireless and a wired mouse. I could tell the difference. And I had a new wireless mouse.
