BTW I do have a 5400 20 gig WD that I've been using since either 1998 or 1999, and it's been flawless.

At work we got 60 new PC's with the WD 800JB drive in september last year. A couple have failed. Otherwise from that they've been OK.

A bit loud for my liking though without the FDB (they're using them on the 200GB model, dunno about the rest). I'm interested to see if they are indeed getting much louder with time as some users are now reporting.

Me? I opted for the 120GB 180GXP (also known as deathstar) and its been good over the last year.

If you are going IDE that board is probably the best.
As for Western Digital they are arguably the best maker of Hard Drives.

Uh... I can name 5 drives faster than the Raptor.
SCSI isnt really same market as P/S-ATA though - not as far as relevant to this thread anyway :)

btw what about the WD 160gb 8mb cache? I see a site selling it here in UK for the same as most places are selling the 120gb SE drives - including the WD 120gb SE. How noisy is this drive - bearing in mind I currently have a quiet of the quiet SG 'cuda 40gb?

Fry's has this drive (120GB/8MB Cache) advertised (in Fountain Valley, CA at least) for $58, just a heads up.

I like Seagate, but the most important thing is to have 2 hd's, and backup your data. No matter which brand hd you have, it can fail. But it is unlikely that 2 drives would fail at the same time.

I've had 3 WD drives fail of about 8 used. I've never had a Maxtor or Seagate fail (about 10 and 2 used, respectively), and I've had 2 for 2 Deathstars fail.

So now I stick to Maxtor or Seagate, although I'd probably try WD again since the drives I had that failed were 2 20G 7200 RPM and one 13G drive. All were purchased during the time when WD was having some problems that seem to be corrected now, if the forums are any indication. And I never had a problem with WD customer service/replacement other than being a little slow.

It's a crapshoot.

What are the 5 IDE drives that are faster than the Raptor? Or are you talking SCSI? Links would help....
