With millions of people in Western Societies afflicted with very poor self-esteem (because of rejection based on physicality), I thought this is a good issue to bring up. As a whole, do you think that modern Western societies focus too much on appearance? I'll leave this very open for discussion.

Ok, maybe this was the wrong forum to post this in. I'm looking for a serious discussion. What kind of pics are you talking about?

not to mention natural selection. no one wants an ugly duck nor to produce ugly ducklings which then cannot produce more offspring. Besides, who wants a world full of ugly ppl!? :|

Yes..as long as we don't actively think about stopping or at least hindering our brains, there they are, those hard-wired sections all firing up.

No we are not too obsessed with looks. We have a culture that idolizes healthy human bodies, yet do not train our kids how to eat and live healthily. The end result is A LOT of people who idolize a healthy body yet are very far from obtaining one and are therefor extremely depressed. It creates a feeling of being trapped.

Body and Mind are both important. We should seek perfection in both fields.

yeah, i think it is but thats what is socitey so you deal with it by getting nicer clothes, wearing your hair a certain way...anything.

Everyone is judged everyday by people they dont even know. thats just how it goes. Some of us (iincluding me) have a more difficult time accepting that.

I think we are too obsessed with looks but after reading your post I mostly agree with you. Unfortunately the consequence of idolizing healthy human bodies (skinny women and ripped men?) is that if you don't look like that you feel like an outcast, especially young women. Like you said, we should educate our kids better on healthy living and they should also be proud of the body they have even though it doesn't look like a model's.

Ugly is really only a perception. In Hawaii before America took it bigger girls were the in thing, now that we have been there for a long time we have imprinted some of our culture on them and big girls are no longer the in thing.

However, I disagree that we are all infatuated with looks - well it is true that on television you see both men and women who spend a good part of their day trying to improve their looks BUT America is getting fatter and fatter on average. SO I think we should say "Are we too obsessed with television: what are the effects"

we are very obsessed because the media, such as television, newspapers, and radio have put a lot of commercials put on by companies who make money on placing fears and messages in our minds. One of the strongest messages are:
"If you are old, you are ugly"
"If you are overweight, a little bit, then you are FAT"

Seriously just watch television commercials and look at all the advertisements that they have. That's the main reason why people are so concerned on their weith. As a society, there's no authority that promotes health, and good nutrition.

Some people won't be serious, when you post in these forums, but some will.

If people were to say "Oh, you're too fat to watch tv, you would see how fast networks drop those commercials that make you feel fat" :)
