Are we progressing or digressing as a society

we are progressing, but as we are advancing we are allowing for people that really should have otherwise not survived to survive, which may give the illusion we are regressing.

imo

Progressing, like all societies, towards the natural and invitable conclusion of destruction. You think that processors and bits will save us from the fate suffered by the romans or other great civilizations?

Socially, we have progressed...
Technologically, we have also progessed...
Economically, that's up for debate...

I would say that nearly all aspects of western society are progressing, some elements more quickly than others. Obviously, there are advances in technology and medicine, but the economy doesn't seem to be doing so well, but boom/bust cycles are part of a healthy economy, so it's hard to say.

However, the current US administration has thrown America into moral reverse and the increasing unification of church and state is very troubling.

I'm not an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

how many people had microwaves and televisions in their house 100 years ago? refridgerators? indoor plumbing?

economic advances go hand in hand with technology and the fancy pants stuff of yesteryear becomes mainstream.

To paraphrase PJ O'Rourke: Things have never been as good as they are now.

good question

Obviously there has been progress in many areas, but others are on the decline.

Here's an interesting thought, history has shown that eventually that every world power falls sooner or later. (Egypt, Babylon, Rome, etc.) So what happens when the US goes under?

Things are better than they ever were for us... so we have been progressing. Hopefully we continue to do so.
