I just got this in email and thought it was kinda helpful. Maybe some of you will also.

UNITED in safety, strength and dedication... ARE YOU PREPARED??
Help America stay safe, pass this message along in every way you can, so we can all safely remain together for as long as possible.
On September 11, 2001 all of our lives were changed forever. This isn't the same world that it was in our pasts. As civilians in this country we are being tested in our ability to prepare, stand tall, and function under pressure. Our government and military have trained and prepared for their jobs in these sobering times. What can WE do to help ourselves and our country, to emerge even stronger than before? For starters, you can check this list for things to do and get:
First, live your life! Work hard, play hard, and enjoy your good times when and how you can get them!
Smoke / carbon monoxide detectors - have you replaced the batteries? Do you even have one yet?
Fire extinguishers
A map - along with several routes marked for possible evacuation
Keep the gas tank in your car between three fourths and full.
Stock up on non-perishable foods. Canned foods.
A non-electric can opener.
A lighter AND matches
First aid supplies
Keep sealed containers of water stocked, and plenty of them.
A crowbar
Keep as many methods of communication as possible. (A cell phone, pager, portable battery powered CB radio, a regular battery powered radio, a whistle, etc.)
Agree on a meeting place in case you are separated from loved ones
Keep several forms of weaponry in the house, and remove anything from outside your home that could be used as a weapon.
Stay alert! Pay attention to your surroundings at all times - make note of possible methods of escape/exit if needed, watch for suspicious persons. Also, stay informed - turn on the news and watch for latest developments.
If you find a bag, suitcase or ANY item you can't recall as being your own, do NOT touch it!!! Call the authorities immediately.
Visit the camping section of a sporting goods store or general store like WalMart. Would a portable cooking device, tent, cooler, lantern or other utility item be of use to you in case of emergency? You bet!
Keep emergency supplies in all your vehicles. (Jumper cables, basic tools, etc)
Flashlights, candles, lanterns, flares, or any other non-electrical source of light for seeing and/or signaling.
A length of rope or extension cord.
Keep cash handy - but also don't drain your account, the economy needs your money as badly as you do.
Extra blankets, coats, gloves, hats and socks.
Have a will. None of us want to think of the worst, but tragedies happen and people expire naturally too. People will already be emotionally wounded by your passing, a will provides insurance that your family receives any property you own without legal hassles or hidden troubles.
If you are traveling, make others aware of your arrival information and flight number.
Make sure all paths to exits are clear. Remove any tables, stands and such to ensure a quick, safe exit if needed.
Maintain civility toward your fellow Americans! Everybody has a bad day and everyone makes mistakes, have patience in traffic, in lines, on the telephone and in general with others - we're all on the same team here - we're all the same, embrace our similarities and respect our differences. Don't be afraid to help others, LEND A HAND you might need them to do the same someday. Be respectful and humble, yet strong - honor your family, your friends, your neighbors, your Country, your God.
Be mindful of possible shelters in your area in case your home becomes unlivable.
Medication and identification
Plenty of extra batteries.
Make a list of emergency phone numbers.
Do you and your family know CPR? Would it be useful to learn it?
Gas masks if that is a practical, affordable option for you, and meets your beliefs of potential risk.
Any utility knife/tool that is portable and multi-function
Lend a hand - there are plenty of charities for those in serious need and organizations that provide aid.
(This seems ridiculous to need to mention, but...) Please, obey the law. Police, fire and all other services are already being overworked - don't make their jobs any more difficult than they already are.
Don't forget to include your pets in your plans!!
The writer, sender and re-senders of this mail wish you and your loved ones the best of health and safety - now, and in the future. Keep a printed copy of this list and check your surroundings accordingly. PASS IT ON, and let's UNITE in safety, strength and dedication to a better, safer world for our futures, TOGETHER.
