It takes discipline to do what I do. I would have thought your many years in the Navy would have taught you that. I guess not.

IMO there is more to justify attacking North Korea right now than there was to invade Iraq.

I have met and got to know a number of Koreans in my life. They are beautiful people. I hope and pray that nothing happens to them.

I'm wondering if strategic air strikes by stealth bombers could take out 90% of North Korea's military power. Until they have a long range missile, this would render their nukes pretty useless.

Topic Title: Are we going to war in Korea???

Well, they ARE one of those Axis of Evil countries we were told about...

I can't begin to imagine the cluster-fuck that will come about over such a thing.

Not only will we have to fight the North Koreans, once again, we'll be fighting the Red Chinese, like we did in the first Korean conflict and Vietnam.

Should it come to that...it'll get ugly pretty quickly...and the draft will have to be reinstated.

China wants no part of what NK is doing. They are actively trying to keep NK from starting a war as they fear NK would take it nuclear.

China is pretty fed up with NK at the moment.

Exactamundo!!
China wants no part of a Nuclear NK.....
As it is now China can handle NK by herself......but let NK go Nuclear and that signifys the end of any influence that China has had or has over NK!!

While what you say may be true, if the US goes marching across the 38th parallel...I believe China will get involved.

Although, maybe they wouldn't want to piss off their biggest customer...and debtor. They ARE becoming more and more capitalistic.

That's what I wanna know. If the S hits the F, China's only got three or so options.

- Sit out while the US and SK war against NK in its own backyard.
- Get involved on US/SK side
- Get involved on NK side
- ? (profit?)

Really? Red Chinese troops were very prominent in the Korean War 1950-53, there were a lot more of them in Vietnam than most people realize, although the majority of them were "advisors," as were MOST of the Soviet troops in Vietnam.

I don't think Red China wants to see Communism overthrown at its doorstep. It might give Chinese citizens ideas...

I don't trust the fucking Communist bastards for a second.

Times have changed....look how much money we spend in China, and how much they stuff they make and ship over here. I doubt they want to screw up their economy that much.

I think China just wants to make sure the NK's don't do anything crazy that could screw up them (nuclear weapons, with fallout maybe crossing into to China, mass exodus of NK civilians into China, etc...).

No. China simply doesn't want 800k refugees suddenly popping up on their doorstep if war breaks out. Which is why they would be quite against any war popping out. They could let North Korea collapse quite easily, seeing that they're North Korea's biggest backers (as in drip feeding the country ensuring the regime's bare survival). They used to be allies of North Korea, but even they seem to be pretty sick of the regime right now, but then the question of that 800k refugees along with a batshit crazy Kim Jong Il at the possible end of the regime with possible nukes (*we know they've detonated one, we don't know if they have any fully processed ones ready for detonation after that, since they only supposedly have enough material to make 6-12 nukes) would probably be quite a deterrent for them not to let the regime collapse.

Yes. Really.

China and the US are now forever joined (well, at least intertwined economically for many future generations).

The only thing that could put the smallest of dents into this relationship between the US and China are the Dumb Ass NeoCons roiling for a 'preemptive' strike in NK to 'put them in their place and let them know who they are fooking with'.

I sure hope you don't have to eat those words.

If it wasn't for China there wouldn't be a North Korea.

The thing you have to know about South Korea is that with the combined forces of the Koreans and the US Forces we have a substantial fighting force. All Male Koreans are required to serve in the military for a few years. So everyone is basically a reservists. We have air bases in both Korea and Japan, and we practice every year in the joint exercise called "team spirit" being prepared for a formidable Air Defense operations. The Defense of South Korea is well planned out and the forces are spread out over a large area in smaller camps.

On the other hand, South Korea is so small that the capital is within Artillery Range. This can be said for forces on both sides.

I think the biggest advantage that South Korea has is that the people are free and their fighting spirit is strong. The people of South Korea would never accept the Yoke of Oppression of the communists in the North. A free people willing to defend their homeland are infinitely harder to defeat.

In the mean time the American Nuclear submarines will fire and wipe out North Korea. There is no real advantage for the North to attack that northern area. The whole area is mountainous and full of Tank Traps. What makes you thing the USA Does not have tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea? Try moving large artillery pieces like that??? Their artillery would be wiped out as soon as they started using it. Maybe it can cause some damage, but the reprisal would be like a giant sunomi. You actually think south korea would just sit there and do nothing?

A few hunded cruise missles later and all the artillery would be a pile of scrap and planes with their 5,000 pound bombs would be on their way.

I won't. I'm well aware of the history of the Korean War. I'm also well aware of current events. Chinese interests were well served by fighting the US back in the 50's, they are not well served by it now.

That might have been somewhat true 20 years ago, but isn't even remotely close to current reality. I've read numerous studies that show the Chinese populace is largely happy with the status quo and the progress of their nation's living standards and wealth.

Chinese communism lite =! North Korean Communism...

North Korea has been a pain in the ass to China for a long long time. The US hasn't been traipsing around the globe worrying about Communism for a very long time, and the defensive buffer of the Korean Peninsula is no longer worth the trouble of supporting a bunch of incompetents. If anything, the continual disparity in living conditions between NK and SK is almost worse than any possible bad P.R. of NK Communism ending.

I fully expect China to take the NK leadership out and replace them with force should they feel it necessary. Besides, NK's nukes aren't exactly a game-changer in the face of China. Their delivery systems are laughably bad, and even the most optimistic estimates for NK might have them holding one or two very weak warheads.

I know how geopolitics work. China won't destroy their own economy without a really good reason, and some backwards/ungrateful jackasses in North Korea aren't going to cut it.

Indeed. North Korea is provoking war but they have by far the most to lose in a war. It's so odd to think but the most likely outcome is

- Korean nations bomb the hell out of each other
- US bombs the hell out of N. Korea.

Then the supreme insanity would be what happened once China reacted.

- China Defend N.Korea
- US and China go to war.

I don't think either sane nation would want any combat action between us. Either way, I don't see what North Korea has to gain from this.

I'm with you, eskimospy.

We are one HUGE part of the Chinese economic machine. North Korea is a crazy nation that treats its own people so poorly it makes China's human rights record like golden.

Why would China risk their economy for North Korea? They wouldn't. I think they might stand up to us politically to try and talk us out of involvement, and maybe send advisors and military equipment to NK troops, but not go to war over them.

North Korea is China's Israel.
