The reason I ask is 3 of my sisters sons just got orders to ship out for the Philipines.
The scuttle butt I have been told is that we are furiously massing forces in the Philipines ready to deploy for Korea on a moments notice.

One of my sisters sons is on an aircraft carrier (sorry can`t disclose which one)located somewhere in proximity to the South China sea and he tell me they are furiously gearing up for something big......

Yet I can`t find anything online about this....

I forgot to mention besides the 28,000+ troops we have in South Korea we also have 50,000 troops on japanese soil who also are ready if they are neded...

I also hope not! We don`t need anymore Americans being killed for whatever reason!!

My brother's unit just got activated to go to Iraq. They're in pre-mob right now. Hopefully if something happens they won't get diverted . . . all their training has been for Iraq.

I would hope not, but if NK really does violate the treaty then it would at least be warranted. I might even consider trying to get my RE4 overturned if it happened, though I doubt they'd bother for a 37yr old E4.

No. NK is about to go through a serious succession battle and they're dialing up the rhetoric to make the rest of the world back the fuck off before Kim Jong Il dies so they'll be left alone when the army and Kim's kids butt heads.

Think you should be glad about that.

The answer is "that depends".

Kim Jong is far more unstable than Saddam ever was and infinitely more a threat. Once he could get away by virtually extorting the world for aid. Now he's done something that crossed the line in most minds. He has the means to declare war. Normally this would be considered saber rattling, however I remind all that we had the same thoughts about Iraq. Never happen.

No matter what you thought of GWB, KJ makes the ex President look like Gandhi. He's mad as a hatter, and has become so insulated from the rest of the world it's hard to see how he has a reasonable perspective of the situation assuming he was sane, which I doubt.

So,
If NK attacks SK, there will be war. There has been some discussion that China would defend NK, but don't you bet on it at all. China is very much in bed with us economically, and money trumps ideology. If China attacked us, we would slag them. Certainly we would take some damage, but there wouldn't be much left in China at all. Not good.
No, I think that China would throw NK under the bus if it came to it. In fact the Russians and Chinese who have enjoyed the trouble Il has caused us, are becoming concerned. They do not want a potential nuclear conflict in their backyard.

My suspicion is that China will quietly but effectively sanction the NK leadership. It is within their power to displace any leader they wish by economic or military means. Il may presume to fence with us, but I don't think he'll bite the hand that feeds him.

No, we're not going to war with North Korea. I'm guessing your sister's son is either on the Stennis or the George Washington, either way it's not a super secret. I would imagine the Reagan (which left NAS North Island today) is probably headed that way as well.

We're not gearing up for anything big, we're just sending ships over there to remind North Korea of its situation. They do this about once a year, and it's best ignored.

The problem lies with the Chinese. No one can move against Kim internally without their blessing. Considering that virtually everything NK gets is through them, China can easily bring any regime to it's knees. It would be hard to sustain a government with no replacement parts for military equipment and no energy sources. China can and would I think turn off the tap.

While it's possible that China may move to eliminate Kim, I wouldn't count on it at this moment in time.

Lil Kim was feeling like he was being ignored. Or he had another stroke, and the generals want to be sure nobody sees them as weakened or vulnerable. So he decided to make sure people would take him seriously again and remember he was there. What's in it for North Korea? They get to play on the worlds stage, and get to feel like they are important. Those in power seem to feel that this is worth quite a few folks in their country having to eat tree bark or make stone soup.

There are probably serious internal strains in North Korea, now that Lil Kim has been weakened by illness. The saber rattling has a domestic as well as the usual international audience. Expect to see continued commotion until he's dead, and for a couple years afterward as his successor builds his America-baiting street-cred.

North Korea is like a crazy person on the bus at rush hour who sticks a hand grenade in his mouth and threatens to pull the pin unless you all give him money. Right now he's showing he is serious by tossing another grenade out the window so all of the passengers can see his grenades are real. However, to give North Korea its due, the more actual sabre rattling they do, the more attention and concessions they get once they agree (temporarily) to refrain. So, like a three year old that has been bribed with candy to act good, they've been conditioned to be bratty, and will do so as long as the behavior is reinforced.

We should definitely be prepared in case thje situation in NK does blow up, but I'm hoping and thinking that it probably won't.

If so, the good thing is we can afford it.
I gently loled for real.

After hearing of some of the fun pastimes that Saddam's kids used to enjoy, I cannot imagine he was a good father. I think he was potentially more nuts than Kim, though I agree far less dangerous because simply far less competent. Kim has done a pretty masterful job of fvcking his entire country. Almost everyone. I think in Iraq a decent number of people used to live half-ok, but those numbers are less in NK, I believe. Not that I really know because information is hard to get. He also has nukes. He does have crazy-man hair, though, and the one-piece dictator costume they all seem to fancy these days.

i think it would be in china's interest that kim's legacy dies. an army dictator is far more stable than a nutjob like kim jong il.

the one thing countries prize above all else is stability.

I heard they are going to bomb the factories at Daquri at 0700 hours. Come in from the north under their radar. But I cant tell you when they will be back.

A war in Korea could get real ugly real fast.

NK might do a lot of damage to the south before they are essentially blown off the map by our airpower.

Most likely the NK Army would be smashed to bits by our Navy and Air Force and would essentially fall apart in a fashion similar to Iraq in Gulf War 2.

At this point it is unlikely that NK has a working nuke that they could use as a weapon, but if they did then say good bye to Seoul perhaps.

Just an all around ugly situation.
