And believe me, if I did have a container-ship full of 3080 cards, and they weren't making me money any more - they would be happy meal toys. For the gamer girls and boys.
 
All this in fighting weakens the shield wall.

We need to heed the advice someone gave earlier in the thread. Which was something along the lines of -

We must maintain the phalanx! The GPUs will block out the sun, and we will game in the shade.

I have an idea to help you absolve you of your mining sins. When the GPU flood arrives, buy as many as you can. Open a gaming cafe. Let the boys and girls enjoy fragging each other, for affordable yet fair rates to help you pay the bills. At night when everyone's gone, you could mine on them.

P.S. joking about the mining sins part. I don't blame you. You were not single-handedly responsible for the GPU shortage.

LOL, talk about dead wrong. Larry has 3090 Ti's and nothing less.
 
Does AMD has a large stock of 6xxx cards? As I understand it the N33 will be on 6nm, so whatever amount of wafers they have in order for 7nm and GDDR6 memory they have made orders for, they could switch for production of N33 cards instead? or is that too much of an oversimplification?

And? You can still use one, sure. But can you tell me with a straight face that you know for sure someone would be using those cards in budget gamer boxes right now? You can't. Pick out any 1660 on eBay right now that isn't getting any takers. Where's it going to wind up?

There are so many 1660s and 1660 Tis on eBay right now, it's ridiculous.

I highly doubt that people are buying them to use as paper weights. They are perfectly usable for 1080p gaming, being a tiny bit slower than a 3050.

That is completely irrelevant to the question whether they are still viable for budget gaming. On the contrary, it means that it may be a great budget option. I would definitely suggest getting a used $150 1660 S over a new $300 3050.

Supply may be even better after the 15th, driving 2nd hand prices down more.

It is completely relevant to the notion of whether some random miner kept people in 2022 from having 1660s by buying a dozen or so for mining when they were already previous-gen products. You know what's going to happen to those 1660s that don't sell? Parts bin. Trash can. Paperweight, call it whatever you want. And there will be plenty.

Larry bought these cards before 2022, right? So he kept these cards out of the hands of gamers during the crisis. It's a bit ridiculous to pretend that only the current situation matters and that the crisis never happened.

And previous-gen doesn't mean that they are useless. Previous-previous gen is still viable for 1080p gaming or even 1440p if you look at the 1080 Ti.

You know what's going to happen to those 1660s that don't sell? Parts bin. Trash can. Paperweight, call it whatever you want. And there will be plenty.

If they don't sell, it's because they ask too much, not because the cards are useless. Eventually the actual value (which is not the same as the asking price) goes so low that it is indeed no longer worth it to sell them. We are not at that point for 1660 Supers, when plenty are still selling for ~$150.

Of course, sellers can be so dumb to keep their asking price permanently too high, so they won't sell the card until it is worth too little for the effort to sell it, but again, that has nothing to do with the question whether the 1660 Super is a viable card for a budget system, which it still is.
 
I can see a scenario where people buy 1660 cards to use while selling their 30 series cards waiting on 40 series if the price is right.

Inventory still looks like a lot. Plus I'm sure they are terrified of The Flood so they will want to wait until the dust settles on that.

Before the end of 2020. BEFORE the "shortage".

Edit: Yes, with NOT overpaying for cards during the "crisis" (*), my ROIs were sweet indeed.

(*) I did buy two $500 GTX 1660S off of ebay in 2021. Those cards never ROIed themselves, and I sold them to AT forum members for $200 a few months ago.

To be upfront, I doubt that the people in question had anything close to a tangible effect on the availability of video cards. Although, it is worth keeping in mind that it was the excessive purchasing before the lack of video cards that helped lead to the lack. If I had to point fingers at more culpable actors, it would be at the huge mining farms that just kept expanding like The Blob, and then the company(-ies) that gladly sold directly to them. That kind of outlines one of the inherent problems with proof of work crypto. The nature of needing to keep the difficulty high enough to ensure good mining distribution results in a constant struggle to maintain certain monetary levels by adding more hardware. Of course, that also means that as you add more hardware to get back to where you were, you're just inching close to the next tipping point. 😛
