I was checking what are the options for 3TB hard drives these days and toshiba offerings got me interested. Especially the 5940rpm ABA line drives got my eye. Toshiba DT01ABA. Not much information can be found by googling, but at least some. These have been around over a year now and still no proper HW site has reviewed any of them. Doesn't make any sense? Are they ignorant or just living in a buble?

Anyway, by googling around i found that these drives are basically hitachi drives because hitachi was sold to WD, but because some comission came between the deal, they had to sell the 3.5" HDD business to toshiba so that the industry wouldn't be almost monopoly.

I like that these drives are efficient, quiet and cheap. Only drawback is that no more than 2 years of warranty.

So, what you think, are these toshiba drives worth buying?

I believe Toshiba and Hitachi are one and the same. I've never own ether and haven't read reviews on their latest drives but I know they could not give the Toshiba 750GB away because they were so bad.

Very few, if any, consumer-level drives offer anything over a 2-year warranty anymore.

I have 4 Hitachi drives, never had a problem with them. One has 44000 hours on it. If Hitachi = Toshiba, I'd buy one tomorrow.

TBH, buy whatever is on sale in the configuration you want... any drive by any manufacturer can fail... or not.
