Are those IT bootcamps really worth it?

Is this something you're enrolling in to hopefully get a job, or something your work is paying for you to attend?

If it's the former, I'd say be wary. If it's the latter, then go for the free training and make sure you mention your new credentials when you're up for a raise/promotion/new contract.

I'd say yes, depending on what cert it is.

Don't take a bootcamp for any of the microsoft certs. You can do those using training software and setting up your own lab.

But the Cisco bootcamps are great, mainly because it is so technical and has all the hardware you need. Plus it specifically targets passing the exam.

IT camp is what you must go through when you enlist to join your country's elite group of forward based IT commandos. One warning, though, the training is not for the fainthearted. Why the paper cuts alone. . .

It really depends on what type of learning style works best for you. I've taken a couple, and for me it's really hard to sit in a class 8hrs a day for a week and listen to someone lecture (and a little demo/hands on) about computer stuffs. The ones I've been to have probably been 75% lecture, 25% hands on. If it was the other way around, I'd probably get a whole lot more out of it.

Its a place where they teach you how to pass a certification test. They're generally viewed as a waste of money.

plus its generally a very short amount of time to go over stuff that would normally take a long time to do.

like they cram 6 months info and training into 1 week.
