Are these temps too hot?

Hi, all,

Just finishing the hardware build and OS install on my first self-built system. Specs are: Lian-li PC-V200 case w/the 2 stock 120 mm fans, Intel 925XCV mobo, Intel P4 550 CPU w/stock cooler, ATI AIW X600 Pro w/stock cooler, PC Power & Cooling 510 Express PSU.

If you are familiar w/this case, you know it has 3 sections, and the mobo section is at the top back, upside down. PSU is in its own section below, and is pretty isolated from the rest of the system. Also, 3 HDs are in their own section. Rear 120 mm exhaust fan is right next to mobo. Mobo BIOS has fans set on auto.

These are the temps I'm getting right this second:

CPU: 46 C
Zone 1: 39
Zone 2: 47

I should say that I have not yet been able to find in the Intel manual just what the heck the "Zones" are, and how they are divided. Anyway, Zone 2 is the problem--the Intel Desktop Utility monitor threshhold for Zone 2 is set at 50 C, and every once in a while it hits 50 and gives me an alert. This system so far only has the OS, antivirus, firewall, and a few utilities. I'm concerned what's going to happen when I load up my video editing and burning software and really start stressing the system. At first I thought the high temps might be because I was testing the system w/the side panels off, and this case is really designed to be closed up, I think, because of how it is divided into its three sections. And indeed, putting the panels on did help, but I still get the alert on Zone 2 still (tho less frequently).

I don't really know where to add another fan, as the rear 120 mm is in the only spot where a fan can go. I looked at those fans that fit into an empty PCI backplane slot, but the db on them seemed a bit loud.

I'm really not ready to get into liquid cooling and all that. I'm just not sure why such a sparse system in such a huge case seems to be running warm. And how to get it cooler?

I'm grateful for any advice.

Hi-
I just built a 915PBL with 3.4 inside an Antec Sonata with stock PS, but added the second 120mm fan. I have a gig of memory, an Asus x600XT HTVD, a 250 gig Maxtor Sata, a 160 gig Maxtor, and an 80 gig WD800 all in the lower drive cage.

Like you- I am not sure what the different zones mean in Intel-speak, but for compare- my temps last night- just while surfing were about 48 to 49 degrees on CPU, and around 32 to 33 degrees for BOTH zone 1 and 2.

While running 3dmark05- everything climbs- CPU I have seen go up to 58 degrees, and the zones up to maybe 40 max.

Nice system there, awesome case and PSU .

I'm not sure what the different zone's are but I'd assume either the north bridge or the MB's MOSFETS. Are your running any of the case fans off the motherboard? If so the board may be throttling the fans back, you may be able to run the fans at full speed if you don't mind the noise. Other then that the only thing you do is put in more powerful fans, PCI slot fans don't do anything but make noise so don't waste your time.

Those temps are warmer than those here who are passionate about having a cool case, but for the general public those are pretty good. If you ever install a temp monitoring program on a dell I can garuntee you that the results will be shocking, those things are sweat boxes.

Here are some reference temps from my experience, though all my systems have been Athlons and as mobos are never super accurate at temp measurements, there is definitly a large margin of error.

Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53 ghz) setup
Enermax cheapo case
5 80mm case fans
Idle temps: 46-50
Load temps: 52-58

Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2.2ghz
Antec Superlanboy case
2x 120mm case fans

Fans @ 12v
Idle temps: 36-40
Load temps: 40-44

Fans @ 9v
idle temps: 42-46
Load temps: 46-50

Fans @ 7v
idle temps: 44-48
Load temps: 48-52

Originally I had this sytem idling at 34-36 and load at 42 @ 9v but I screwed around and messed up my setup somehow so my temps are higher now. What I have been told before is simply not to worry about temps, if the comp is stable don't worry about it. Personally I aim for never going above 55 and currently I don't. there are people getting load temps at 42 c all the time and thats awesome but not neccesary. I don't think you have anything to worry about in your system.
