Are these temps normal??

Hey guys

I've got an Athlon 64 3200+ (socket 754, Newcastle core, running @ stock), currently being cooled by a Thermalright SLK-948U with a Thermaltake A2016 fan (80mm, speed adjustable), using Arctic Silver Ceramique as the TIM. My idle temp is around 42 degrees, while under heavy load (Prime95 for instance), it can reach mid 60's! I'm using MBM 5 to monitor temps.

I run the A2016 at about 4500 RPM, as any lower just doesn't work that well and any higher is too fricken loud. :|

I also have a Leadtek A400GT TDH (6800GT) that idles at about 59 degrees, and under load has reached 85 degrees.

My case (CMStacker) has pretty good ventilation, with 80 + 120mm intake fans plus 80 + 120mm exhaust fans... the irony is I have to run the chassis open.

I'm assuming that you're talking Celcius, not Farenheit.

Those temps do seem a bit high. Did you apply the thermal paste correctly when you installed your heatsinks?

Why do you have to run with the chassis open? This will often increase temps, as air is forced to flow over/through heatsinks and fans.

Yup, I'm referring to degrees Celcius (I would love if those temps were Fahrenheit though...). When I installed my CPU's HSF, I smeared a thin, even layer of the TIM over the entire CPU heatspreader.

The graphics card is running on the stock Leadtek cooling (you'd think that much copper would guarantee reasonable temps!).

If I close my chassis (I've got the windowed side panel for my CMStacker), temps go up an average of 2-3 degrees. 🙁

what is your case temp? i guarantee it is over 40.
if you lower that to 30 you will be a lot better off than buying into a new bs cooler

That's a good question. I haven't been able to get MBM 5 to show me anything resembling a case temp, so I don't know. Or maybe I've got another diode giving me what I think is the CPU temp reading...

Wanna hear something crazy? Over the weekend, I gave my CPU's HSF a good dusting off, and now the idle temp is 37-38! Who'd have thought some dust could affect temps so adversely! 😕

Me 😉 Dust affects your temps a great deal.
