no for that price get some Grado SR-80s or SR-125s, they are definitly worth the money the SR-80s can be had for about 85$ and the SR-125s for about 130$

Zepper - apperently you have never heard good headphones because they are worth the money, If i had 800$ to blow id pick up some Grado RS1s SOOOO NICE

I'd only get closed headphones if you really need sound isolation.

What are the specs? Frequency response? Impedance? Driver diameter? Neodymium?

I have a pair of sennhesier hd 580's. They are very comfortable, they give very rich sound and deep bass, I love them. I've tried on numerous pairs of low medium and high quality headphones and to this day I'm happy with my purchase that I made more than a year ago. I sent them out for repair the other day when there was a loose wire actually.

Make sure that you test and wear headphones. If you need a microphone you might want to check out a standalone labtec ( I use one of these ) it's the best route.

Yeah, personally I don't really like the Grados. I love the quality but I find them uncomfortable. I think that if you would like a really decent pair of phones then you should get some Sennheisers.

Also please disregard that post about BOSE Quiet Comfort 2 because they sound absolutely terrible, not to metion that any audiophile knows BOSE is not a quality manufacturer, they are a quality marketer.

Senn 280s have been treating me very nicely. I considered the 580s/590s or 600s, but decided $100 was plenty to shell out on a pair of phones - plus, I wanted closed phones. The sound quality is amazing; I hear nuances of music, movies, and games that I never noticed over any speaker system, including my gigaworks. Everything just sounds better on them. Their bass is a little lackluster, though far from bad. I thought it was just a headphone thing until reading much the same about them on websites.

I am in the process of helping a friend transfer his studio recording to CD-R Master so that it can be sent off for a Glass Master to then have a stamper and CD's made from it.

If you ask most professionals, they will say Sennheiser and Grado dynamic speaker type headphones are the affordable professional choices. If money is no object you go for STAX electrostaics (1500.00).

If you want affordable "volume" and ruggedness for non mission critical work at a good price, the Koss studio headphones are good.

The killer earbud headphones are the Shure's but they start at 95 bucks and go up to 500 bucks. They are reported to sound wonderful - they ought to at that price.

Another very good semi-pro headphone are the Yamaha's - I used to own a pair, they were very good sounding and comforatble.

Radio Shack is most likely crap OR..if it's good...then it's repackaged from a reputable B+ tier manufacturer (with a corner probably cut here and there) and you're paying too much.

I have a pair of older Pro grade Sennheiser 454's (the yellow and black ones, larger diameter drivers than the 424's of old). They still sound great after say....25 years! If you can afford it, quality lasts.

The best all around headphones for computer use are probably the Sony MDR-V6 (NOT THE V600, there is a huge difference). I really should just make a webpage about grado's and computers, but if you wat the lite version below is a reply from a thread 2 days ago about that subject:

Also, I would note that ANY HEADPHONE benefits hugely for an amp. You can build your own for $20 in parts, search for "Chu Moy Amplifier" on google.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be careful. I have a set of SR125's, and absolutly love them, but two notes here. First, with the SR80's, if you do not plan on getting a headphone amp, get the SR60's. Secondly, make sure you try these before you buy. They use a very weird design that to some is incredibly confortable, and literally make some people's ears bleed. Third, keep in mind these have ZERO isolation. I don't mean very little isolation like most headphones, I am talking about literally none. As much audio goes into your ear as into the room, and they provide no isolation from background noise. If your next to a loud computer, this can cause you to crank the volume without realizing it. Also, one of the reasons they are great for audio is that they move the soundstage to a more confortable position then inside your head. This is bad for 3D audio because it moves the soundstage to a place somewhere between where speakers and headphones are, which 3D audio is not desinged to handle. When I first got my SR125's, my clanmates immediatly noticed the difference, which is saying something.
These are by far some of the best headphones for audio, but you have to keep all the above in mind. If you want my suggestion for the ideal computer headphones, I would rate the Sony MDR-V6 (NOT THE HORRIBLE MDR-V600, there is a HUGE difference) above the Grado's. If you live near a pro audio shop, or a music store, you can probably demo both before making a decision.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A note about Sony. In general, I agree with the opinion that Sony makes good products, but you can almost always find a better product with the same specs for cheaper, in part your paying for the brand name. When it comes to headphones (not earbuds, a whole nother subject), sony has about 150 models, but there are THREE that I could consider exceptional. Those are the MDR-V6 ($60-$80), the MDR-CD3000($550-$500), and the MDR-R10 ($3000-$4000). Just about everything else they make is subpar.

Scroll down half-way for an explanation.

yup, head-fi.org also has info. headphone.com too. closed = no sound leakage, but ussually not as good sound quality as open. phones that cover ear completely and place pressure only on skull are comfy:) no ear squish. as for a mic, no really good headphones iknow of come with those, just get a boom mic. higher end headphones might require an amp.

If you're spending over $100 on a pair of headphones, accept nothing less than sennheisers. Everything else is inferior.

Visit headwize.com or head-fi.org. You have a *LOT* to learn. Also, the vast majority of Senn's over $100 *REQUIRE* an amp. A lot of them have 300 ohm impedience. The average cheapie headphone has 32ohm.

I built a this one http://headwize.com/projects/showproj.php?file=szeke1_prj.htm a LONG time ago and I never finish the casing and power supply... where can I get those? Radio Shack? do I alternatives?
