Are there SysAdmin/Database jobs that don't require an on call rotation?

My job is starting to really annoy me - being the only sysadmin/dba and having to respond 24/7/365 to emergencies.

I was hired as a 2nd sys admin, think my boss is happy with the decision to help balance the load.

If you're the admin and a production system goes down, bringing business to a halt, do you really think they want to wait til you stroll in at 9 the next morning to fix it? Being on-call is an administrative duty. Best bet is to get a job where you're something other than an admin :)

Work at a company that has more than 1 admin so you have a rotation and their may be more specialized roles where you might not even need to work at night (company might even have specific night shift people).

He said no on call rotation at all in the thread title.

I think OP needs to work hard then use that to ask for a non-admin position, like an architect.

This is another thing, this is my 3rd real job in IT, first two I was the only guy there in IT, start-up type companies with 20-40 employees. I'd have to take care of every IT related thing day or night. I work at a company now with an IT director, and 6 people in our department including support which I rarely have to ever deal with anymore. Makes the administrative part much easier/fulfilling. I can focus on the network/system without being bothered to fix printers and other nonsensical stuff.

Well I work at a start up. I don't mind being on call, but a rotation would be nice. And a rotation that gives me at least a week off :)

I'm a sys admin w/o any on call rotation. There is the understanding that if something comes up, I have to come in though that hasn't happened in the 7 months that I have been here.

The only "after-hours" thing that I have is a quarterly maintenance that needs done.

I have DBA responsibilities, but my role is limited to design. I don't maintain any production systems. No on call for me.

I work for a bank and am the only Sys Admin for our HP Blade center running VMWare plus about 20 Windows servers. One nice thing is that no one uses these servers during off hours or holidays. I've been at my current job over 4 months and haven't gotten called yet.

Two of us "on call" although we've never had to come in. Numerous phone calls taken after hours though.

Network admins, btw
