Are there still compatibility problems with AMD CPU's?

Maybe this is old skewl, but I am seriously thinking about trying out an AMD upgrade. The only thing holding me back is remembering how much incompatibility there was between AMD systems and certain <ahem> video cards, popular software, etc... Do you AMD owners have trouble with hardware compatibility and running any apps that your AMD CPU just doesn't seem to want to play nice with?

No not really. Not personally. I heard Decss gives an error message on AMD systemes but it's only like hearsay. It would only be because it was coded sloppily anyway, there could be a patch...
There's more competition in the AMD chipset world (and the chipset is what we're really talking about here) today. This means that bug ridden chipsets don't cut it so well. I am sure the 133 chipsets are very up to date.

I had some problems back in March? when I got an Abit KA7 + Athlon 700 and a 3D Prophet Geforce card. But I think it was more the motherboard chipset than the actual CPU... And I believe the chipset issues have been straightened out... I'll tell ya, my next system will definately be AMD based! I am VERY tempted to upgrade to a 1GHz with these prices!!! 🙂 Cheers!

Compatibility is all about chipsets and motherboards, there's very rarely anything CPU-related. Software and hardware compatibility of today's best Athlon/Duron platform motherboards is at least on par with their best Intel P3/Celeron equivalents.

Hopefully with AMD-760/760MP, ALi Magik, Micron Mamba/Scimitar and nVidia Crush (or whatever these last two will be called) in the pipeline for near future we'll see more high-quality chipsets for Athlon. Rushed chipsets the Super7 platform was famous of was mostly responsible for ruining AMD's image in eyes of some consumers - so far with Athlon things haven't been as disastrous.

Watch out that you only buy good products and no noname crap. My system just runs great...not compatibilty problems at all.

Also look out that you have the latest VIA drivers and for Win2k the latest patches and service packs ... then everything should run fine.

I've built maybe 6 AMD k6/-2/-3 machines for other people. All work flawlessly. Two of them have TNT2's, 3 of them have Voodoo series (V3, Banshee), and one has an old Blaster eXxtreme. I've used Asus P5A-B, Tyan Trinity 100AT, and a Fic (can't remember the model). I put Win98se and Win2k on them. They are all very very stable and Windows apps fly.

Incompatibility problems with K6's? Not anymore. But like Magic30 said, stay away from generic mobo's. I've found generic RAM to work in SS7 mobo's maybe 95% of the time.

NO! I didn't belive it for several years after getting burned badly by a K6-2 300, when it FIRST came out. My system is now a overclocked Duron and it is more stable than the BE6-II and Celeron2 system I had. I am not going as far as saying Intel sucks, but I am happy for the moment. 🙂

The only incompatability I have encountered is with the KT133 chipset and A3D sound cards like montego A3DXstream.

Well, after K6-2 hell...
Got the mobos and CPUs home from the computer show...
Open the boxes. Well, wanting to OC the things, there was a pleasant suprise: a ThermalTake Chrome Orb in each box.
So then try to work with it on the bench...well, it sucked. Put hardware we knew to work (were using bits and pieces off the bench) on it (Namely an S3 Virge for video and the enlight power supply), and it initialized. From there I stuck all the cards on it, my HDs, etc. and NT4 fired right on up.
Then over the next couple hours I got Win2000 on it, and still flawless. At about 6 AM, when I went to bed, I decided to put it to the test...
Quake3, 800x600, high quality. I just let it loop demos. My previous K6-2 350 (all same hardware, except CPU and mobo) would not take this for more than 2 or 3 minutes. I wake up at about 5:30 PM, and it was still looping demos, and the heatsink was only barely warm to the touch (Though the video card could have cooked my breakfast).

My dad got the same thing (bought two right there at the show)...he didn't even reinstall Win2k. The SCSI controller had to have a few things changed, but it has always been quirky. Overall, it was a painless upgrade.

Microstars have always been as stable as a rock, and seeing them on par with performance and features of the most current Abit, Asus, Soyo, and AOpen boards is quite nice, as that has previously been their only drawback.

Now if you will excuse me I have to go find a conductive pen so I can begin overclocking my Duron...😎

I have a newly built AMD 1Gig TBird system with all newer hardware and have had no compatability problems at all, even under Win2K, everything gets along perfectly. For the price of high speed AMD CPU's, you be a fool not to go for a new 1Gig + system.
