if you know your prescription offhand, is there a site that will let you buy them?

(i've never bought contacts online before)

Well if you provide the name and number of a doctor, even if the prescription is older than a year, some sites will still accept it.

well, some of them let you fax your prescription.... and if a kid in third grade wrote out a prescription for you, it would be enough for these guys.

Are you for cosmetic lenses?? Just go to your local Optometrist or LensCrafters... they all do Cosmetic lenses...

If your visually deficient, wth would you get lenses with no prescription?? You have to make sure you get the correct size as well, or you'll just end up farking with your eyes... is it worth it??

i wear prescription lenses right now. the prescription is about 1.75 years old. i called my optometrist and he said it's expired, so i have to get another exam. i'd like to save some money and keep my current prescription. i'd be getting the same brand, size, prescription, etc.

Just came across this -

http://www.1800contacts.com/do.../DocRx-release-1.shtml

The One Year Myth
Some eye care providers tell you that they cannot issue an expiration date of more than one year. This is not true. One year is a minimum, not a maximum. You should discuss your wearing habits and eye health with your eye care provider to determine if you can have a longer prescription length.

coastalcontacts.com

While checking out, tell them you will fax the presciption. They will ship it anyway.

I've ordered from here before with a prescription of about 1.5 years old.

http://www.visiondirect.com

I'm ordering again from them this week, but this time I have a current prescription. They have good prices and quick shipping. Check them out.

We ordered the wifes online with a good savings and after they arrived we got a letter from our optomitrist saying they will pricematch anyone online. Will have to see when I order mine but that would beat having to order them.

Makes sense...

visiondirect.com works.. I've used them for awhile now, using about a 2 year-old prescription... My eyes haven't changed in the interim, that I've noticed... I found them about 20-25% cheaper, after facoring in duties and exchange...

when you say you use a 2-year old prescription, do you mean you actually have a doctor's precription on paper that is 2 years old? or does visiondirect contact your optometrist?

They've never contacted either my optometrist, or contact lens vendor that I'm aware of.. I'm not sure where my actual prescription form is.. I just use the tabs on the side of my lens boxes... includes all the info I needed...

Unless I am totally offbase here, the only reason why you get a "prescription" for lenses is so a contact seller knows that a doctor examined and recommended the required strength. It is not the same as a drug prescription and it is not illegal to order contacts without it. Hell, you can buy reading glasses at walmart. My wife used 1800contacts with no prescription, she just put in the numbers and they ship them. I'm not sure why it would be illegal to sell contacts without a prescription?

Great thread! I'm about out of lenses, but thought I'd have to go back to the eye doctor for another 1-year prescription.

i tried to order with visiondirect.com and they cancelled my order after contacting my optometrist.

so then i ordered with costalcontacts.com, saying i'd fax in my order, but i just got an email today saying that they are still waiting for the fax.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but I just tried ordering from Vision Direct who I've never had problems with before and they must have "cleaned up" meaning they wouldn't take my order without an unexpired prescription ... And my Optometrist only issued a 1 year prescription. My insurance only covers a trip to the eye doctor every 2 years but I need new contacts ... Anyone have any luck with any of the other companies and not needing a prescription? My eyesight hasn't changed, and I don't want to spend the money on another eye exam just to tell me that ... I also don't feel like paying full price by going to Lenscrafters or others like that that will give you the eye exam "free" but charge you more for the contacts.

Thanks for any help that you fellow "four eyes" guys/gals can provide! :)
