The tool has two parts, a receiver and transmitter. You use them to find the exit hole on the other side of a wall you are planning to drill through.

The DrillSpotter isn't horribly expensive, however I'm not sure I'd ever need it for a project after the one I'm planning to do so I'm a little hesitent to spend $200 on it. Do they make crappy walmart knockoffs or anything like that? I'm not having a lot of luck finding one right now.

Have you spent a long time measuring before you began drilling?

Have you had to drill a number of ?test holes? before you drilled the final hole?

Have you ever drilled through a concrete or masonry wall or ceiling, and missed the location on the other side?

2 pieces? Looks like you just put one piece on one side, and the other.. on the other.. and it'll beep when the two are aligned such that a straight hole drilled from one, would line up with the second. Probably just magnets.
 
Looks like you put the drill through one piece, the piece induces a signal in the metal drill that the other piece on the other side of the wall picks up when it's centered.

I guess you need two people to use the thing. Why can't you just poke a nail through where you want the drill to go and aim the drill there?
 
I'm always up for a new wonder-tool, but can't see how this would help me much. Most holes I drill are into walls where the other side of the wall is irrelevant, or into smaller wood pieces etc.

Suggestions for an awesome portable drill guide...now that's something we can talk about. 🙂

you could always try a tape measure?
 
how often do you care that the hole is exact on BOTH sides of a wall?

when do you even drill through a wall anyway?
