I'm annoyed by everything in theaters. In no particular order:

I did myself a favor and bought a high end HT setup. I now wait for the DVD to come out and enjoy a better picture and audio experience than most theaters, while sitting in uber-comfortable recliners. To me, theaters are as outdated as phone booths.

I have said all along that if DVDs and movies came out at the same time, I'd get a reasonable home theatre system and never go to the movies again. You pay more to sit in an uncomfortable seat with some tall guys head blocking half the screen. But if you want to see Spiderman 2 yesterday, you have to deal with it.

Why? Just ignore the fact that the movie comes out and wait for the DVD. Why is it so hard to wait 3 months?

Well, there's quite a few movies that are a much longer wait than 3 months. I know the first 2 Lord of the Rings came out on DVD in August and had a December theatrical release.

Hell, 'Elf' isn't even out on DVD yet!

When I saw Lost in Translation, the guy sitting next to me and my gf brought who I assumed was his brother, who was autistic. At first, I just thought he was noisy, which irritated the sh*t out of me, but when he started grunting at the top of lungs, I realized that he actually had an affliction, and by the time I left the theater, I couldn't help but think about how much patience and courage the brother must have.

OTOH, cell phones bring my homicidal side to the surface.

u have to stand up for yourself... i give them one chance. if they stop it ringing and put it away, thats a mistake. forgive. if they start talking.... report to usher, or tell them to get the f*ck off the phone.

Because Spiderman is awesome.

I like it too... which is why I wont risk ruining the experience by going to a nasty, dirty, annoying theater. 😀

You know, I wont hesitate to do this. But by the time it's all done, the fscking movie experience is ruined for me and I'm ready to go postal.

yes seething anger does put me off the movie which totally sucks. people are too tolerant of bad behavior which has led to this situation in the first place.

I totally agree with you. We've been conditioned to not say anything when people act up. It's very sad.

People talking/messing with their phones in theaters annoy me.
People talking on their phones on the bus while I'm trying to read/sleep on the bus annoy me.
People talking while driving and not paying attention that they just cut me off annoy me.
Kids/teenagers talking on their phones anytime annoy me.

my phone is always left on, but the ringer is off, so i can pickup messages if they are left.
i've never in my life heard someone on the phone during a movie.

Your phone doesn't pick up messages when it is off?

The movies out 3 months ago are just as good as the movies out now. Just start watching the ones that have just come out on DVD, as if they just came to the theater. You'll have plenty to watch for 3 months and by that time, the ones out now will have come out on DVD. Make sense? 🙂 Why does it matter when a movie is on at the theater or not?

Theatre and restaurant owners alike should block all incoming and outgoing portable handset communications on their premises. No excuse. Only 911 calls would be completely unblocked. Of course in time of tragedy/disaster, this would be lifted so people could call their families.

They already have this capacity in place in tunnels as I have witnessed it first hand.

This would put an end to this nonsense once and for all.

Cheers!

Or you can do what I do and wait at LEAST a week post-release before seeing a movie. This works especially well in the summer when something is coming out every week and the masses move from movie to movie each opening weekend.

I'm sorry but no home theater setup can compare to watching a movie on that massive screen... especially if you're privelaged enough to have an IMAX near. Plus, I love the look of a reel projected film and would take that over a DVD viewing any day.

I read somewhere a year ago or so that theaters were going to set up cell blocking technology in all of their locations to get rid of this problem. What is the status of this now? I was so looking forward to it.

The status is that's illegal in the United States, unfortunately.

Are you sure it wasn't just because you were, I dunno, in a tunnel?

Amazing how that works, huh?

LOL!

I only go to matinees now, almost always in the middle of the week, and usually wait a week or so after the release date. I always have great seats, no crowd, and typically no annoyances.

The worst hasn't been cellphones in the theater in my experience.
When I went to watch Day After Tomorrow a month ago, these 3 HULKING OBESE "men" sat in front of me. They stank of Jack Daniels and porter-potties.... OMFGGTFOUFB!!
Since the only open seats I could see around were in corners, I decided to bear the stench and watch with my fingers up my nose. 🙁

No there is a system in place due to concerns of national security. All communications in and out of these locations must be controlled at all times. That is about all I really should say at this point.

Cheers!

You can't/shouldn't do that... sometimes a call is important and there are still people who are courteous enough to put it on vibrate so they can know when they're receiving a call... and to take it outside.

I hate people who talk on phones as much as the next guy, but there are emergencies so you can't just take it all away because of a few offenders. Your (anyone's) life doesn't represent everyone else's so don't assume it's never important enough...

IF people are expecting an important call they should not be in a movie theatre!

Cheers!

In terms of profit, what's the difference between a consumer buying the DVD vs. a theatre ticket ?
