Are there other people annoyed by Cell phones in theaters?

This is the second movie I have gone to in about 2 weeks and the first movies I have gone to since the beginning of Fall semester.

The first movie I sat next to a girl that was text messaging someone (kept hearing that dah dah dwah of her phone and every key she pressed made that key being pressed beep, and the screen was so bright it was almost blinding) so I kindly asked her to turn it off and she didn't, she just muted the volume but I had that annoying glare in my eye the rest of the movie.

I just got back from another movie tonight and my Girlfriend made the comment that the person next to her was text messaging during the movie and driving her nuts, although I didn't notice that, the guy next to me got up and left because he got a phone call, at the very beginning of the movie someones phone rang and they quickly ran out and some guys a few rows up where doing something with there phones. In fact, there were so many phones open that it was almost as if the lights never dimmed.

Now I don't know if this is a problem everywhere, but everytime I go to the movie I have to pay $15, and I am annoyed by the lack of respect these people have, I guess some people just have more money to waste than me, or I am just getting older, but this is really irritating me and wanted to know if others are having this problem, and if there are any solutions to this problem.

I tried to add a poll and don't know if it is working correctly...first time with a poll.

Sure, they can be annoying. But idiot parents with screaming babies are way, way more annoying than any cell phone. I hate these ppl so fscking much it makes my eyeballs throb. It's not like they're just dragging their spawn to little kid movies. I had to put up with these asshsles at a 10:00 PM showing of Dawn of the Dead a few months ago. Stop being such cheap bastards and hire a babysitter. Arrrrrrgghhhhhh!

or just leave the babies on the curb or something.

I usually have pretty good luck with going to midnight shows. no kids, and the theater is usually pretty empty, outside of my and my friends.

Saw Day After Tommorow last week in the theaters and these two chicks had a cellphone that they were passing back and forth wayyyyyyyyyyyy down in front. Of course we had to be sitting all the way in back, so I got to see a nice blue glow for the last 1/3 of the movie.

Turned out to be one of my GF's friends though, and the shirt + boobs that she had going on made me not really want to kill her anymore~ 😉 😀 😛

I haven't seen a screaming baby in a theater forever...that is some bad luck, I think I would be more annoyed with that also...my roommate just told me that a theater in SLC has done something so people can't get reception in the building...That would take care of my complaints.

Yes, It annoys me because they COMPLETELY ABUSE technology, I mean honestly, people should only be using those phones for like emergencies or like leisure time where they're walking or whatever, not where it's all public and you're supposed to be quiet. And also, another one that truly pisses me off, is when people drive while talking on their pathetic cell phones. I mean HONESTLY, don't you think these technology-abusing people could stay off the god damn phone for a few minutess or pull of to the side of the road instead of acting like an ignorant child and not paying full attention to traffic? I would like to take everyone's cell phone that does such things as these and beat them senseless with it, it would be so much fun, and I'm sure they would see how stupid it is to be on that phone for half of their life.

I haven't been annoyed in a theater in a while, but when I went to see Kill Bill Vol. 1 there was someone who, apperantly, was with someone else who couldn't fvcken read! As you can guess, the one person kept reading all the subtitles for the other idiot, and they weren't doing it very quietly. I finally gave them a little "Shhush!" noise and that seemed to quiet the person down, but not completely. Another reason to stop illiteracy in the US it seems.

teenagers live for their cell phones these days. It's terrible.

I wish it was legal to jam cell phones.

In the UK, we have a warning at the start of the film that mobile phones are prohibited. Doesn't stop some people, but they're beginning to use night-vision systems to "monitor" the audience. This is partly due to mobile phones, but also related to people trying to make "cam copies" 😉 of films, and people throwing sweets etc. Throwing sweets is a pretty rare occurance these days, but there's always a bunch of baseball-cap'ed idiots with their feet on the seats in front of them, noisily eating crips and sweets etc.
These reasons are why I don't really go to the cinema anymore, or at least if I do, I go at the "quiet" times.

Movie theaters around here ban children under 8 from R rated shows after 6pm.

FOR SURE!!

I went to see The Day After Tomorrow and some jackass kept getting phone calls...and to top it off, he started tacking picutures with his phone. It took everything in me not to shove his phone up his ass!

I had the problem with a different movie. A hispanic family sat in the row behind me, and one of them was reading the subtitles for everyone else. It was fvcking annoying.

When we went to see the Passion of the Christ, a woman next to me decided to have an extended conversation, I would have tolerated 30-60 seconds or so for an "emergency" I told her to turn it off or I'd have her removed from the theatre.

She hung up, but was pi$$ed @ me...

I read somewhere a year ago or so that theaters were going to set up cell blocking technology in all of their locations to get rid of this problem. What is the status of this now? I was so looking forward to it.

I'm annoyed by everything in theaters. In no particular order:

*talking
*laughing
*coughing
*sniffling
*farting
*smelling people
*cell phones
*beepers
*people eating loudly
*bad picture quality
*bad sound quality
*uncomfortable seats
*dirty seats
*sticky floors
*lines
*crowds
*crying babies
*asshole teenagers who think being loud and rude is cool.

I did myself a favor and bought a high end HT setup. I now wait for the DVD to come out and enjoy a better picture and audio experience than most theaters, while sitting in uber-comfortable recliners. To me, theaters are as outdated as phone booths.

That sounds like a great idea.

Cellphones haven't been much of a problem around here. People use them to play games BEFORE the movie starts which I have no problem with, and every once and awhile I see a screen light up for just a second, I assume to check the time or to just make sure the call they missed wasn't important. I'm cool with that.

But conversations in the middle of the movie, or lots of text messaging? Get the fvck out of the theatre. You obviously aren't here to watch the movie but I am so stop fvcking it up for me.

Do you all never say anything to these people? I've never had a problem telling someone to stfu. The great thing about it is that 95% of the people in the cinema completely agree with you so it's not like you're going to have any problems or anything. If you say stfu and then they say 'no you stfu' then more than likely someone else around you is going to tell them to stfu too. 😛

I don't put up with that crap at all. If you want to talk on your cell phone you can do it outside for free. Nothing is so important that you need to talk on a cell phone while in a movie and if there is something potentially that important then you don't need to be in the damn theater.

BTW, I did talk on a cell phone once while watching a movie. I was the only one in the theater though. (Late run of Red Dragon) 😛

Oh hell yes. But it's still a pain in the ass and can lead to me ending up in jail for assault or disorderly conduct. I knew it was time to stop going to theaters when I started feeling the need to sit in the control booth with a night scoped sniper rifle. 😛

I have said all along that if DVDs and movies came out at the same time, I'd get a reasonable home theatre system and never go to the movies again. You pay more to sit in an uncomfortable seat with some tall guys head blocking half the screen. But if you want to see Spiderman 2 yesterday, you have to deal with it.

Why? Just ignore the fact that the movie comes out and wait for the DVD. Why is it so hard to wait 3 months?

Because Spiderman is awesome.

So true -- I predict Spiderman 2 will come out on DVD in November.

Amused, not to take away from your Home theater arguement, I say that there is nothing like the perfect movie-going experience. I admit that it's happened all-too-infrequently -- a grand total of only three or four times in my life -- but when everything comes together the way it should, it's Heaven. The last time I had such an experience was in 2000 when I saw MI-2 in a brand-spanking new tri-amped THX theater. The movie was not that great, but the picture and sound were so amazing, I didn't care. Combined that with the fact that there was no talking and the theater was new... man, why can't it be like that ALL the time? 🙂

Roger Ebert is a fantastic critic -- when you read his articles, you can tell he's a huge champion of having the perfect movie-going experience.

/edit one more thing -- while talking is an absolute no-no, I don't mind people REACTING to a movie. Laughing at appropriate times, or even cheering or clapping without being obnoxious, can add to the experience. While watching the Matrix on the second day it came out, I had a great feeling when everybody just laughed, clapped and cheered when Trinity was instantly given the ability to pilot the helicopter and said "let's go" with a straight face.
