Are there no good AVs out there anymore?

I run Hit man pro and hit man pro alert cryptoguard and from time to time run TDSSkiller. With a dash of Hijackthis. I use Hijackthis.de to analyze the log.

What about Windows Defender - how does this rank against the paid software?

here you go, check MSE's score at the bottom, it's the same as Windows Defender, and I also hate how its updates come through Windows update not as an automatic file definition update

I own a license for almost all the major AVs out there but I cannot find a stable on to install on my Windows 8.1:

Eset Smart Security / NOD32 v7 = slows down my system so much and makes the internet browsing crawl. Totally opposite to their past versions which were known to be the lightest AV out there yet still secure with no False Positives

avast! Pro AntiVirus = Switched to avast! Free after being let down by ESET, it was very light and good with no FPs but the recent update has a lot of bugs such as major system slow down, their forums are full of user complaints with no solution, even the latest BETA is buggy which was supposed to fix these issues.

Norton Antivirus = Has a stupid bug that I refuse to live with and is not going to be resolved soon because according to Symantec that is not a critical bug. The bug is, you will randomly get 2 icons of NAV running in the taskbar. Some people on their forums suggest deleting a registry entry, which I am not happy about, but still, the icon will mysteriously show up twice in the task bar. so gay

Kaspersky Internet Security = Surprisingly, the lightest of the bunch despite it previously known to be heavy, but it has a bug with Nero 2014 so that's a show stopper for me since I use Nero 2014 Platinum

Bitdefender AV = buggy pile of crap, slows down my internet, adds a protection by modifying my MBR entries which I am not happy about since that causes issues when restoring images I have created using Macrium Reflect Pro

BullGuard AV = The new interface is so lame, the icons on the right are half chopped as if someone forgot to complete their job. and I hate the fact that it displays features not included in the AV only such as Firewall and parental protection and they have a big clickable icon that says ADD FEATURE which only prompts you to upgrade to then ext level product, so stupid, I don't want no paid product with ads in my face

Other free solutions I've tried:

Panda Cloud AV, very light yes, but it gives me sooo many false positives it isn't even funny

Shit I haven't tried yet: AVG, Avira

What is going on? there isn't any good AV anymore

I don't mind paying but I want something that is secure, light, and works right

I was using a Avast on all our computers. Avast slowed everything down to a crawl and on my newest computer Avast shut everything down for 1/2 a day!!

I switched to bitdefender and have had no issues at all. Even on my wife`s computer which has been a huge problem until I switched to Bitdefender!!

I use the AV that beats them all...OSX. lol
no I know they have exploits too but at least their not targeted quite like Windows. I would say the oddball Linux distribution would probably be the safest bet but with so many hackers targeting servers to steal your data, doesn't really matter anymore.

I run avast without any problems. Everything is running smoothly on a freshly installed Windows 7. Sharp as a knife.

I have the paid versions that has the firewall, and I'm very happy with it.

Thank you for your message. Norton was the best of the above bunch I tried in terms of being light. When I posted this message on the forums I was advised that this is not on the priority of fixes for Symantec because it is not a critical bug. I find this a very embarrassing bug though. it doesn't spoil the functionality, but I just don't want 2 icons of the same program. I have never seen such a bug in my life this should be the number 1 priority to fix because it spoils the image of Norton. Hope you guys fix it ASAP as I have just bought a 2 year license for Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus so norton lost that money

wait,wait..hold up. Someone from Norton joined up here just to put out the same generic messages they give out in emails?
wow.
Now if I was that serious as to join forums to support my companies product, I would hand out some free 3 or 6 month keys to rally up customers for putting up with flaws while they wait for a fix along with updates on how the fixes are going if possible. It gets people to using your product instead of liking another product and ending up being biased and faithful to it instead. It also helps solidify consumer confidence as well as word of mouth advisement from them. The main thing is to keep people from going elsewhere but I hope at least NortonSupport can go beyond the generic messages in terms of actual support.

very true, word of mouth is spreading quickly and now my 3 year subscription money went to Webroot SecureAnywhere instead of Norton for a small graphical glitch they have that is very annoying.

You're welcome! I understand your concern. As I said, we are working towards fixing this problem. I do not have an ETA on the fix date though. I will certainly keep you posted on the fix date.

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in trying our products! However, I do not have any 3 or 6 months key for you to try.

If you are really interested in trying, please download any of our 30 days trial versions.

Hi all,

I'm glad to announce that we've just released AVAST 2014 program update (build number 9.0.2013).

List of changes:
• FIXED: Uninstalling avast might hang at "stopping service: avast! antivirus"
• FIXED: Upload issues for Dropbox and Flickr
• Performance and stabilization fixes in Stream Filter - e.g blocking of ajax calls
• Several firewall fixes - e.g. blocking of Google Earth
• Stability improvements - several crashes fixed

avast! cleaner: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

It should be possible to install this version on top of your existing avast! installation (all settings should be preserved). Or you can use in-product updater.

thanks a lot, enjoy this release!!!

I used to use Avast back in the day and noticed it slowed my browser down so I switched to Avira. Then I started having problems with Avira and started using Bitdefender free. Had problems with bitdefender free on one computer and uninstalled it. That computer is using an older version of Avira now and no problems, but the newer version I put on the other desktop hijacked my browser and I had to use safe mode just to uninstall it. Now that computer and the netbook are using Panda cloud. I'm happy with the performance of Panda cloud you won't believe the start up time difference.

I was trying various anti-virus products and tried Avast 2014, but it was crap! It still after all these years slowed the Internet down and casued folders on my second HDD not to open. I will never go back.

Thinclient you Privatewall. ( I can't get an anti-virus on there)

Desktop down stairs using Avira.

Desktop in my room using Panda cloud.

Laptop using Bitdefender free.

Netbook using Panda cloud.

All computers except the thinclient are using Comodo Firewall.

i had the reverse experience to you because bitdefender slowed everything down but avast didn't.

yeah Bitdefender is the worst of the bunch Ive tried. it's a virus on its own

it adds an entry to the boot options as well for god's sake

Bitdefender caused my ME3 to keep crashing on launch ,I had to uninstall it and stay with good old Avast free.
