Are there free Linux distributions?

First off I know nothing about linux so let's just get that out of the way. It is open source isn't it? I know there are different "flavors" of Linux, which are the most used/most popular? Are any of the versions free? Where might I go to find more resources on this topic?

The OPERATING SYSTEMS forum would be a good place to start.

http://www.linuxiso.org/

I'd try Mandrake first.. It's probby the easiest distro to use out of the box.

Other easy ones to try:

Suse
Redhat

I'd stay away from Gentoo at first - you'll learn a lot but it will take a ton of your time. Same with Slackware and Debian.
