Are there ever going to be faster CD-Roms??

I would tend to think not. I think we've reached a point where CD-Rom technology isn't going to progress much further. Perhaps we'll see a 100x eventually? But even so, why would you want to? I don't want to wait for a half hour while the CD spins up, and I don't want it to WHIP the cd in my face when I eject it either. 😉

What is wrong with 30x+ speeds? Perfectly fast enough!

I have to disagree 🙂 I think technology sometimes is fast &amp; sometimes slow to develop. CD-Roms will develop, just not as fast as CPU's.
 
Hmm... come to think of it, cdrom speeds have kinda hit a wall at 52x or so this last year, hasn't it? *shrug* My fastest is a 40x, and it works fast enuff for me.

Not really. New technologies are coming out or have come out. People are more interested in improving CD writing technology, hence the 24x burners we are seeing. Also, I must mention DVD drives. Those have come a long way as well. Nobody cares about CD-Roms, and they have peaked at 72x.
 
Egad no....my 50x Asus already spins at 10,400 RPM....that's more than fast enough thank you.

Seektime is more important...I would take a 24x CDROM if they upped the Seek time.
 
Well you don't need a faster cdrom really, I have a 12x that will run any game or app that I need. For just pure cdrom to hard drive transfers I could see where you would want speed. The thing that annoys me about these multi-speed drives now is that they are loud, take forever to spin up, and unless you hunt around and get the best model (and pay more), then video scenes skip a lot on them (they are constantly spinning up to load data and then spinning down, only to have to wait for them to spin right back up again).

They will get faster, and it won't be CLV or CAV technology improvement. It will be some totally new and more efficient way to read. 🙂

DVD is your logic step for &quot;faster&quot;. Mechanical storage devices are limited by the laws of physics and will only spin so fast. We're fighting more of a desity issue with CDROMs rightn ow, not really spin-rate issues. DVDs offer a greater density which means you don't need to physically spin the platter near as fast to read the same amount of information.
 
I would definitely like to see a faster CDROM drive. I would think they could increase the transfer rate like with a hard drive.

Not really...there are two ways to increase transfer rate on a hard drive. Increase Areal Density or RPM. Well as I mentioned my Asus 50x already reads at 10,400RPM...that's already very fast for removable media.
As for Areal Density...you can't change that on a CD really. To increase Areal density requires an upgrade to the storage media and the reading device. Becuase they are packaged together in a harddrive it's no problem. In a CD it's much more difficult becuase you have to adhere to a standard, or else the new high density CD won't work with current CD ROMs. So you need new standards. Like DVD...a DVDROM is really just a high density CDROM (well DVDs can be double sided to...but aside from that it's really just a high density CDROM).
 
CD-Roms are at the market limit for speed/etc. The 72x drives that were designed had a few marketing problems.(cost, failure/budget CDR read failures, and general low OEM acceptance) If more 72x CDROM drives had sold, then perhaps there would be more incentive to push them farther.

Amish did you buy the 72x CD-ROM drive? I only know a few people who did, and at least one guy stopped using it all together.

The majority of CD drive companies seem to be happy where CDROM tech is now, so they are targeting CDRW and DVD/DVD-R technology.

if faster meaning the transfer of data dvd will be the wave of the future...it already transfer more data at same or slower speed...1x of dvd is like 9x cd in terms of kb/s...so 16x = 144x of cd data being transfered...

cost of dvd disk and burners will come down and more games and such will come on dvds and the rates will soar again...

I think this may be a density issue like mentioned above...
 
That's my point. (i didn't buy one either)
If more of the 72x drives were purchased, then the market would/could target faster CDROM drives to satisfy market demand.

As it is now, the last 20 CDROM drives i have installed/purchased were all 48-50x drives. This seems to be the market/consumer sweet spot.

hehe really, that happen to me before, computer froze and WHHHOOOSSSHHHH CD across the room, thats about 15-25 feet away, 4 inches and it woulda been in my neck!!!
 
HA! Think &quot;The Ripper&quot; from UT! There was a movie a long time ago starring Dolph Lundgren...he was a cop tracking down this alien drug dealer. The drug dealer would always say &quot;I come in peace&quot; before killing his victims.

The drug dealing alien had this weapon. It was essentially a metal CD Rom that flew under it's own power and was attracted by the human body. I.E. you couldn't hide from it. The disc cut thru wood, metal and obviously was really good at decapitating people.

I can just see my installing my 325x speed CD Rom, loading a CD in there, it spins up, sounds like a dentist drill gone mad and the CD Rom shoots out of there, bounces off all the walls, decapitating me before becoming lodged in one of my PM speakers...just like in the movie! Wow!

I wonder how fast a CD would have to spin to cut through a computer case?

I'd hate to change a CD on that drive, you would need eye protection and safety gloves. Either that or you would have to install brake pads on the drive spindle to slow it down.


Yea, that movie with the Deadly CDs was silly, but when they found that CD still spinning stuck to that speaker magnet, i thought that was pretty cool.
