Are there different kinds of divx encoded files?

I have 2 movies on my hard drive. 1 that I copied from a dvd (as a backup copy, seriously) and it works great. But I also have a downloaded movie on my Hard drive and all I see is a black screen with a little divx icon on the bottom right part of the screen. It's an .avi file but no video or audio comes out. I have tried it with Power DVD, Windows Media Player, and some divx player and none of them worked. I have the latest divx file too. What do I need to do to view this file (movie)??
