Are there differences in the quality of glass?

I need to have my windshield replaced. A few friends have suggested Safelite as the cheapest place to do it. One then brought up how he's had to have his windshield replaced a few times(keeps getting cracked, and keeps having safelite do the repair/replacement). So I was wondering if it's possible that they are just using cheap glass?

Any ideas? I think safelite is national, so any who's had repairs/replacements done there they can chime in too 🙂

FYI here are the quotes I got. So there isn't THAT big of a difference.

no idea. But I'd like to know. I have a 500 dollar deductible, therefore I'll be paying it all out of pocket.

Who knows....maybe they're the same product, rebadged for sale. There really aren't that many glass manufactures.....just resellers.
 
There is a difference in they type of glass used. Ask them who manufactured it. PPG is usually considered the best. Remember, OE is not usually the best, it's usually the cheapest.

BTW, Safelite is not known for customer service or intelligent installers. The actually shattered a window replacement on my employees car. 😱

Safelite is the default installer for most insurance companies it seems. I can say that for Volvo's and Toyota's that the glass is not as good as OE from what I have seen. It seems to pit far quicker than OEM.

Wow, not even as good as the OEM huh? Doesn't sound good. Thanks for the input.
 
huge difference. myth busters recently tested the "touching your hand to a windshield will prevent anything from shattering the glass" myth. (uhh...i didn't kwno it was a myth)
anyhoo, they tossed bowling balls, rocks, small babies, whatever at an american (i forget the type of glass that is standard) car and the glass rarely dented, much less shatter.

they did the same thing with a euro car. ...not the same result. they shot one--ONE--BB at the euro car and the windshield shattered. blew my mind. anyway, that's all the input i'm capable of giving.

As much as I would love to do that... I can't. Missouri has vehicle safety checks and unfortunately, mine will fail 🙁 The part that pisses me off is that there are so many rocks and crap on the roads in St. Louis that I know it's just going to get chipped/cracked again. That's why I've waited so long to get it replaced in the first place!
 
i just remember a 20 20 a long time ago about bad windshield replacements, some do a poor job of gluing or get hand oils or whatever into the contact area weakening it. important since windshield part of the structure that keeps the ceiling from crushing when flipped or something.

thats alot. look in the papers for coupons.

plus your comprehensive should pay to replace glass. it should be separate from your regular $500 deductible. and WHY $500 deductible for comprehensive?! keep it at $250. ($500 for collision is great.)

oh, and u dont needed to replace glass till inspection time. it saves u from getting glass replaced twice or more in a year.

I'll look in the paper again... but didn't see anything last time. I called and talked to my agent, apparently the 500 deductible applies. I'll check to see what it woudl cost to lower it to 250, but I'm pretty sure I checked that when I applied for it in the first place and it was a significant amount.

Also, it is inspection time 🙂 The glass has been broken for ~2 years... I waited as long as I could!

woah.. $500 deductible applies to cracked windshield?!

interesting.. comprehensive usually has a separate deductible for glass damage, else it eliminates one of the major reasons to get comprehensive-> glass replacement because of road rocks as your driving. of course it depends on carrier.
 
That's what he told me. I asked about making a claim and he said most likely it wouldn't be covered because it's under the 500 dollars. They're coming out to look at my car for hail damage soon, i'll be sure to ask that guy about the windshield too.
