I think the reason they were big, is because they existed there are now "thousands of bands like that"
If you have a band which is similar to the Beatles in both genre and quality nowadays they can hardly reach the same level of popularity because a lot of the fans of that music genre holds on to the Beatles as being 'the greatest', and they'll judge the newcomers by higher standards. If it's the same it's a copy, and the original is better. If it's different it's 'just not the same', and the original will still be better. It's hard to surpass a band that is seen as legendary, and therefor actually easier to become legends yourself if you play a new genre, or at least a new subgenre.
Many liked it and copied their music, but only rare few can ever be hoped to reach that level because they have to meet higher standards to be judged the same level.
I can't even claim that I'd not look at music the same way. I'd also judge a bad song by one of my favorite bands much softer than even a good song by a band or singer that I hate.
No, son, if i was putting a gun to your head and forced you to listen to anything it would be Ace of spades much too loud for what is good for your eardrums.
The way it's meant to be listened to.
So, only one other person besides me says Pink Floyd? They're one of the only big name classic rock era bands I'm just not a fan of.
Also someone was saying that Americans don't know Led Zeppelin isn't American. Everyone I know is aware they're British. As far as best American band, I'd say The Doors.

America PAY ATTENTION. British != English
/Rant.
British is just a superset of English though, right? So everyone from England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland is British, whereas only people from England are English. Then it wouldn't be inaccurate to describe an English person as British, just imprecise. It would be like calling me an American as opposed to a Minnesotan; the former is right but the latter is more precise.
Or am I wrong in that?
Although come to think of it, I can't think of many famous Scottish or Welsh bands so I guess you can usually say English and you'll be right.
No, your right, but people all the time (from America) call me british, but my scottish friend scottish, it's irritating. It's just an important distinction that for some reason the americans I know do not understand. However you do... A+
On a side note, what about The Proclaimers or Texas, or Wet Wet Wet?
Yes. Even though you have been defending him, he is insane. You don't like Led Zeppelin?
Are you insane?
I can agree with you about Pink Floyd, I own the wall and dark side of the moon but they rarely get any play time. I dunno just can't sit and listen to them much.
Old Metallica
It's too shrill and 80s hair band sounding. (Did they even have bass back then?)
There are also some amazing songs from them in that era (Master of Puppets, One, etc), but a lot of it is crap!
It's the first band I though of but I do like two of their songs. Can't believe nobody has metioned
U2 - There stuff is just pompous and annoying
The Police / Sting - I cannot STAND that whiney boring sound....just grates on me to no end when I hear "Roxanne" come on....YUCK!
I'm gonna go with Dave Matthews Band also
