Are there any specific rules for LCD monitors?

I usually leave my CRT monitor on or it goes off on its own into stand by mode. Should I always turn the monitor off when I am not here? Will my monitor be affected if I leave me computer on all day and turn the monitor off?

Practically all modern CRTs (made within the last few years at least) have advanced power savings mode features that use very little electricity after going into sleep mode, so physically turning off the button saves little, if any, additional energy. The only real issue I see with leaving the CRT on while attached to a computer, is that you may have a rare situation where the computer freezes (instability or what not), leaving a static image on your screen. The monitor will not know it's supposed to power down the screen so you have a potential screen burn-in situation. I'm not sure how often this has happened in the real world but it's something always on my mind.

I would imagine that crts manufacturers have fixed that problem somewhat because I havent heard someone say that in years. I help out with the network at out school and we have had comps for 7 years now. It seems like the newer computers just dont have that problem. One problem we do have is the crt monitors shocking us and thats pretty scary.

He's asking about LCD's though.... I have the same question.

And should I ever turn off the vacation switch? or just the front power button.

Well LCDs don't suffer any burn in problems so there's no issue there. For power savings, look at your owners manual, it will tell you exactly how much power is used for each power stage setting, though frankly I don't there's going to be much savings in physically turning it off. Maybe a few watts at most.

I just checked the manual on my NEC 1760V and it said to use screen savers to avoid image persistance. And to turn off the monitor if your not going to be using it for a while.
