Are there any service packs or updates that will make Windows 98 somewhat stable?

Unfortanately I have to use Windows 98 for a while but this OS is very unstable, illegal operations left and right, lockups, freezes, you name it Windows 98 does it.
I need to make it somewhat stable. What updates or patchs do I need?
Thanks for the help.

hmm, win98 has always worked well for me.
more details of your system, irqs, software & driver versions would help here!

But are you using Win98SE or the original version.
I am stuck with the original, I dont have SE.
Is there any update that will make mine SE?

the original version!
you can almost make it SE by installing the SP1 service pack which updates the usb software but unfortunately doesn't give you ICS.
The full SP1 pack is not up on the windows update site but you can link it for manual d/load from this page! 🙂

did you read his original post, "Unfortanately I have to use Windows 98 for a while" ??

If you're doing FRESH installs of Win98 and you still get these major reliability problems then I don't think you'll find the salvo in any service pack or patch. I would start looking at your hardware for potential trouble. Despite all the pessimists that are quick to think win98 is the root cause of every crash, freeze and misc problem, there are other things you need to consider. Sure there will be some nuisance crashes and illegal operations >> once in a while << but know that MANY MANY MANY MANY MANY people use Win98 EVERY day and have no problems what so ever...try to look at what's different in your scenario...

I hate being one of the many in most cases, but this one is OK.🙂
