How about unassuming rock bands that are single handedly trying to save rock from its current dire straits? I nominate the Black Keys for that.

Don't get me wrong, I love the black keys... mgmt... a ton of local musicians that are making great music (the Brooklyn indie rock scene is outstanding). I'm not saying that only rock stars can make great music. In fact, I don't really like Poison but knew Brett Michaels was a rock star.

Trolling aside, you raise an interesting issue. Nickelback is HUGE by current standards, but would you be able to recognize the lead singer?

Yeah, unfortunately I could.

The other dudes in the band, no way.

Ditto with Linkin Park (at least a few years ago) - hugely popular, but do people know the lead singer's name? Chester Bennington? I have no idea why I know that, but he's now Elvis.

I saw Jared Leto doing an interview full of rock star posing and rehearsed aloofness and.. Seriously, we've come a long way from grunge...

i'll be seeing Them Crooked Vultures May 16th @ Caesar's Windsor... 4th row center :awe:

JPJ stole the show. My god that man is fucking RIDICULOUS.

You had me until MGMT. "kids" is like the most cheesey pop driven bullshit I've heard in a long time.

In terms of "swagger", I'd say...

Lead from QotSA, Dave Grohl, TR, Maynard, matt bellamy, slash, the guy from gogol bordello

that's all I can think of for now

although I hate her with a passion I'd have to agree

Yes, I agree about Gaga just like I'd agree with Britney Spears, New Kids, and NSYNC.

Noone can dispute, however, that Micheal Jackson was and still is a rock star today.

Depends on who's generation you may be talking about w/ respect to rock stars.

Those that create Rock (50s-early 70s) or those that are pretenders and came afterwards.

Most people know Chad Kroger's name, and probably what he looks like. HOWEVER most of those people know that because they make it their life goal to hate him with every second of their life.

Meh, I think most people hate them because they hear them on the radio and they suck. I've maybe seen one youtube video of them, but I've heard them enough to know that they suck. I've seen the guy's picture before, but would never recognize him.

No mention of Maynard/Tool yet? I'd say they qualify, even at the rate of two albums per decade.

I've seen the YYY's a few times and Karen O just oozes the old time rockstar/punk lifestyle.

I saw Muse at Coachella and damn if they aren't rock stars. I'm not a fan but it seemed like the entire audience knew all the words.

I would say Beth Ditto, but not so much. She puts on a hell of a show (saw at Coachella too) but I see her more of an entertainer.

I wasn't implying otherwise sorry, just trying to change gears a bit. I think that bands who create amazing music and aren't an in your face archetype are far more interesting.

Unfortunately I'll have to disagree about MGMT after their latest album.

I would say Adam Jones is not a rock star.

A fucking gangster ass guitarist, but not a rock star.
