Are there any performance hits using channel's 3 & 4 over 1 & 2?

AMD Phenom II user wondering if using slots 3 & 4 would hamper performance.

The reason I ask is that slots 3 & 4 are further away from the CPU than 1 & 2, which is postive for my cooling situation on this board.

can't say for i7, but i have to stick dimms into the far slots a lot due to big hsf's... haven't had a problem...

You may want to consult you motherboard manual. There usually is a page about which memory slots should be filled first.

To enable successful system boot-up, always insert the memory module's into dimm 1 first

That's as in depth as my motherboard manual goes. According to this statement, short of the system not starting, I shouldn't have an issue. Doesn't say anything about performance though.

Thanks cube, I assume it's not a big issue using the later slots as you do. I use some pretty big HSF's myself and could use the extra room.

Not all boards are like that. Some boards have dual channel DIMMS grouped together rather than every other one. Usually the easiest way is to match the color of the slots.

^ Not sure about now, but on the P4s I have at work, there is about 7% performance increase if the RAM is dual channel vs single channel in benchmarks.

Yes, I know 2.8Ghz HT are old, but they are due to be gone within the next 9 months.

MSI K9N SLI V2

You need 1 stick in orange and 1 stick in green for dual channel.... i thought my mobo was broken till i found out whoever designed this board was drunk lol
