are there any old school bbs's exist out there?

i remember i used to enjoy getting the new issue of computer currents (now known as computer user) and microtimes just for the bbs listings.. way back when wildcat, telegard, renegade, etc.. which was the bbs software that most people used. i even ran a bbs from my 2nd line using telegard 2.7 for about a year or so which was really cool. met alot of cool people online (never met any of them in person though).. anyone here also run a bbs? only bbs that i know of that still actually exists in my area is a place called City Of Night BBS. that place was a cool chat bbs. the person that runs wrote the software for the bulletin board. pretty cool stuff. it had 10 ports or so, and everyday after school, or on the weekends, the ports would be full.. that's pretty much changed now with the internet. the software got ported over to linux and doesnt have any more phone lines to connect. just thru telnet. doesnt get as much traffic as it used to, but many fond memories..

oh yeah, forgot all about wwiv. that was prolly the first bbs software i played around with. but after looking at all the proggies out there, i settled on telegard..

i always got a kick out of people calling my bbs.. i actually got Practical Peripherals 14.4Kbps external modem (with a cool lcd display) from PPI for $250 (i guess that was cheap back then). back then, the modem company actually had a incentive for bbs operators. i think the only thing that you needed to do was advertise their company.. so i made an ansi pic or something that looked like the modem and made an advertisement in the login screen. pretty mediocre in todays standards.. but cool nonetheless..

I'm sure there's a few left, very few. Why be a member of a BBS when you can sign up for an internet ISP for $5.95 per month.

I remember using Telex with my 286 dialing into the local 4 line BBS, we got 30 minutes free everyday, every now and then I'd pay $10 for 40 hours!

actually, i never had to pay for any.. the ones that i used to call were all free, including City of Night... surprising since that place generated alot of traffic. im sure the bbs op could have charged and wouldnt have deterred anybody from calling. I always used to call them, and if it was a pay one, id just cross it out and move on to the next. the bay area back then actually had a good amount of free bulletin boards running.

then again, i wouldnt trade my cable internet accesss for anything in the world.

I used to go to city of nights too. It was cool until they started charging Then the internet grew up and city of night was just a distant memory.
