I'm thinking about buying Galaxy Note 3 (I'm a sucker for big screens), however I was wondering if there are any phones coming out in next 3-4 months that are worth waiting..

S5 with a 5.2 inch screen should be coming end of Q1.

Probably won't be available until end of April/May internationally.

CES is in January, but I don't think we will see any major phone announcements then.
Most companies announce their phones at MWC (end of February) with release 1-2 months later.
There are no new high-end phones coming out until then.

Expect the usual Galaxy S5, HTC, LG, Sony, etc.

I grabbed a Note 3 on release day. I am still in love with this phone. Unless there's a new killer feature coming, it'll be hard to beat for a while. (Nothing else with an SD slot, great battery life, and removable battery anyways)

You'll find out about the first wave of new phones at CES (next week) and MWC (late February), and possibly special events if Samsung and others decide they'd rather announce things on their own terms.

I would count on a few introductions at CES. Maybe not from Samsung or HTC, but Huawei and Sony like to use the venue to launch new phones.

Hmm, galaxy s5 does look interesting, assuming half of the rumors are true... I think I'l wait :)

I think the Galaxy F rumors are more interesting. A 2nd flagship phone set to release alongside the galaxy s5, except it will have a metal case instead of the plastic of the S series.

Wait just a bit, there should be a lot of new stuff at CES, but the Note 3 is pretty good, lots of developer support, user replaceable battery and mSD card.

Considering what Motorola and Google are doing with phone prices, and the price the LG Optimus G Pro are going for, I can't imagine spending $600-$700 for a phone. Any phone.

If you want something Note-sized, get the Note. No other manufacturer has been able to make a compelling device in that form, and the Note 4 won't be until near the end of the year.

Yeah I'm very happy with the Note 3, though it tooking rooting it + some different xposed modules to get it the way I like. No other phone in the market right now even interests me which says a lot.

Of course if the S5 is awesome, I'll be tempted for 30 seconds, but it'll be impossible to give up the extra real estate.

Honestly...I feel like the MotoX is pretty much...perfect. I don't see how Android can be made any better. I didn't have this feeling with say the previous HTC Evo 3d I'd played with.

Only thing would be if they managed to make it even thinner...like iPod touch thin.

But processors are fast enough, battery life is...decent...display is fantastic, sound is good. Improvements really have to come in the form of fundamental science breakthroughs in batteries, or software improvements.

have the motox myself and i love it so far. not sure why it needs to be thinner, i am happy with the size. i sort of wish it had the sd slot, but the only thing i used that for on my other phone was music, which i didnt make heavy use out of.

The biggest strike against the MotoX for me is the size and battery. If Motorola were to release a 5.5" version of the MotoX with a 3000mah battery, I would be first in line.

Have to disagree hugely - it's certainly a very good phone and you can make the case it's one of the best all-round phones available today, but we're a good ways from the "perfect" phone.

- Battery life is merely good enough. Even my Note 3 I'd consider the minimum for "good" battery life in that it gets me through a full day on bad cellular connection with 5-6 hours of on-screen time with 20% left. Make that 40% left and you can start talking about perfect. As the Note 3 has noticeably better battery life than the Moto X, no way.

- Camera is also merely good enough. If it has an iPhone 5S quality camera, then again you can start talking about perfect.

- 1080p screens aren't a killer feature over a 720p screen, but you can certainly tell the difference, especially in non-mobi optimized sites and especially in non-latin languages (korean, chinese, etc). 1080p screens don't seem to give up anything in power consumption, brightness, or any other aspect so not having it keeps it from being perfect.

- Base memory is still 16GB and you have to pay more for 32GB with no micro-SD. 32GB needs to be the new starting point.

- Top and bottom bezels can be shrunk to make the phone even more compact (a la LG G2 top bezel)

None of the above is new tech - assorted phones in 2013 all have them. The perfect phone would bring them all together. Hardware wise, the G2 probably ticks a bunch of the above. <edit> However I dislike LG software almost as much as Samsung, the back material is as bad as the S4, and last I checked the dev community wasn't great (the redeeming grace of Samsung software).

a 720p screen with medicore battery life?

If that's your idea of perfect then that's pretty sad... the Moto X was already behind the times when it was released

It's kinda like how pure electric cars are kinda stuck right now. Their range is around 100 miles. And it will be stuck like that for a while until some fundamental science breakthrough greatly improves batteries.

Or, take cars in general. IMO, cars today, while nicer, aren't significantly nicer than cars from 15-20 years ago. There have been some evolutionary improvements, but short of electric cars or hydrogen-electric aren't going to see drastic changes...

Or like how innovations for Mac OS X went really fast for a few years but since have tapered off to the point that they literally gave away the latest update...

It's just a square screen that I can check email, browse the web, and take pictures with. My Moto X does this very well, and it does so with impressive speed.

Should be an announcement about the LG "G3" soon. Rumors are that it'll be something like the Galaxy S5, only not. :)
