Microsoft's RalliSport Challenge is a much better racing game than CMR2. I'd recommend it, even though it isn't completely realistic.

I thought that Viper Racing had it's own physics engine. I thought that the only other games that used the GPL physics engine were the Papyrus NASCAR games?

Anyway, I did about 6 laps in Live for Speed around the road course in the "middle" car...the one that looks like a Mitsubishi Conquest. I started off with a lap time of 2:20. Then I went down to 2:10. Then I went back up to 2:18 due to a trip to the sand pit:). Then I went down to 2:00. My best run was a 1:52.

The physics model is quite amazing to say the least and the force feedback effects (understeer, oversteer, bump steer, brake feedback) are all nicely done:p

I'm not positive. I had heard that they use the same or similar from someone.

Grand rPrix Legends. Noting comes close. Ask me for the mods. F1 2002 is crap compared to GPL. Different eras but trust me GPL is much more fun to drive.

I don't want to drive old '67 era cars:)

Different strokes for different folks. I like modern racing, not golden oldies.

Just a comment(rant) on Rallisport Challenge: MS/Dice farged up Multiplayer big time. It works very well, but try and find a server! The most I've ever found was 3 damn servers, for the last month the total has been 1!! The problem is that the ability to Find servers does not exist as part of the game! You either have to know the IP or use a third party browser such as RCSpy or All Seeing Eye. In short, if you are looking for Multiplayer racing, skip Rallisport Challenge!

A bit dated now, graphics must suck compared to some of the stuff here, but:

TOCA and TOCA2 were quite fun if you like that style game.

I just took a look at the BPR mod for F1 2002 as well. Another big WHOAH!! :D

I'm gonna have a lot of fun this week when I get home from work during the day...that's if I'm not already dead tired from work :D

LFS is great - takes a while to be able to turn in some good lap times, but I've been improving still ;) Try Viper Racing too - has a very realistic physics model.

Yeah, I dropped my lap times by 30 seconds within 6 laps of racing. My 1:52 time is still about 18 seconds off the best on that track with the "middle" car according to the LfS records page.

I played Viper Racing when it first came out. I always had a problem with the rear end swinging around on me in corners...then again, I was trying to race with a Gravis Xterminator gamepad :)

I forget what my best laptime in LFS is (on the GP Advanced track, the one where you start facing the hairpin) but my total time for two laps was 3:27 and some change... can't remember (I was using the Turbo car), still room for improvement :D And in Viper racing, the rear end can flail on you while slamming on the brakes, the key to that game is feathering the brakes, same goes for LFS when using the RWD cars.

Viper Racing is a mean ole bitch to play, and MotoGP is evil as well.
They're incredibly good fun though.

The Vipers in Viper Racing really do need a good setup to work "properly" though, otherwise they can be hard to drive.

Heh.. Viper Racing sucks if you don't have a wheel. I have a Momo FF wheel and it's awesome. I love the force feedback in this game and the game really isn't all that good until you get into the advanced settings and run some of the other tracks.

Try GPL, especially with a good wheel and I'm sure you won't care that you're driving 60's era cars.

(Not wanting to nick your thread, but can you just buy a wheel and use if with other pedals, or do most have weird connectors so you have to use certain wheels and pedal sets.
I have some random non-FF wheel that came with pedals, and I was wondering if I could buy just a wheel and use it with my existing pedals. They have a standard gameport on them (I can plug a gamepad into the pedals and use the pedals and all the gamepads buttons at the same time, but could I plug in a different make FF wheel?)

I'm just a fan of modern racing cars (LMP's, GT's like the Viper GTS-R, C5-R, 550, 360, etc). I just don't have much of a fondness for older racing cars. I played GPL extensively when it came out, but just didn't warm up to it.

It definately is an arcade racer and a cheap rip off of the Midtown Madness series. If you have an Xbox, Midtown Madness 3 comes out tomorrow. I will be the first in line. It is also an arcade racer but it is very fun.

The problem with modern racing sims is they tend to have really poor physics modelling compared to Grand Prix Legends. For some reason, modern F1 sims make it seem like you're driving on ice. With grooved tires and narrow chassis, modern F1 cars do have less mechanical grip, but they have a tremendous amount of aerodynamic grip. Hence, game developers tend to focus their efforts on accurately reproducing the effects of aerodynamic grip but they forget about mechanical grip. The only time it should feel like you're down on grip is in moderately slow speed corners where the vast majority of grip available is due to mechanical grip because there is insufficient aerodynamic grip. I tend to find that the modern sims neglect the reality of these types of corners and it hurts the overall experience. One such example of a great corner ruined because of this, is the sharp right-left last corner at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This always takes out the best of drivers because it's all about maximizing the available mechanical grip. Now, load up your favourite modern F1 sim and take this corner...it sucks, there's absolutely no attention paid to the details. But the details are everything.

A consistently-held opinion amongst modern F1 racers is that go-karting (the real type, not the cheesy public speed-capped karting) is as close as you're going to get to driving a real F1 racer. In fact, they all tend to kart whenever possible. If you've ever karted, you should therefore know what it should feel like (this feeling will be of mechanical grip as karts don't have aero packages). Modern F1 racing sims just do not have the same kart-style feeling. The only thing that comes to mind is that the whole experience is like you're driving on ice because they've neglected to accurately reproduce the feeling of mechanical grip.

If you have GPL, install the new models, sounds, and track details that people have been developing in their spare time as a hobby. Then, try a course like Monza to start out and get the feel for the cars. There's essentially no aerodynamic grip because F1 hadn't evolved to using aerodynamic-aids like spoilers and wings in the ere that the game simulates. So the sim has had to accurately reproduce the feeling of mechanical grip. The force-feedback patch for GPL is great and gives a lot of great feedback. I really have yet to come across a more fun and true-to-life sim.

The only modern F1 sim that even came close to feeling good to me was F1 Racing Championship. It simulates the 1999 season but came out in 2001. Unfortunately, the AI sucks so you can't actually race. The computer opponents will consistently crash into you and stuff. But for running hot laps, it's pretty good. It also had pretty good graphics.

Still, I can't emphasize enough how GPL is where it's at. If you can't get into it because that era doesn't appeal to you then I'm not sure what else to say. But that was a special era in F1. You could actually almost race in Monaco instead of having a hot-lap procession:)

Good luck on finding a game that you like...get a good wheel/pedal combo like the high-end Logitech Momo or a custom made one.

And that's the rub. Just b/c everyone and their grandma loves GPL doesn't mean that I like it as well:)

Like I said, I have no affinity/love/need/inkling/want/urge to drive '67 era F1 cars. The same way I don't use Linux or Macs.

I'm just not interested. I buy/play things that interest me. I have been and will always be a sports car/modern F1 fan. It's also one of the reasons why I have already grown a bit bored with NASCAR 2003. Sure, the physics are darned good, but I get tired of turning left and lumbering around the road courses in 3,400 lb stock cars.

I've had infinitely more fun playing Live for Speed than I've had playing N2003, and it's a freebie :p

I'm not trying to be a hard ass. I realize that GPL may be the best thing since sliced bread, but it just doesn't do it for me. I'm sure that there are a lot of games out there that are uber realistic and fun...but not all of them appeal to me.

Gotcha. I was just fishing to see if you'd take another look. I felt the same way as you when GPL was released. I didn't really get into it until 6 months ago. In any event, with modern sims, a setup biased towards slight understeer in high speed corners is your friend. Keep that in mind when setting up your cars and do learn to setup your cars. Those people with freakishly low laptimes have tweaked their car setups extensively - they're not superhuman in driving capabilities:)
