Are there any diets w/o many vegetables?

I need to do something about my weight but my biggest problem is that I don't eat many vegetables, so I've never attempted anything. For example I can't get a salad for lunch. It seems like everything requires you to eat vegetables.

I don't eat:
Lettuce
Tomatos
Onions
Peppers
Carrots
Celery
Cucumbers
Mushrooms
Radishes
Spinach
Brussels sprouts
cabbage

I don't know why I won't eat any of those, but I just don't see it ever happening, they make me gag if I even get a taste of them.

Vegetables I do eat (not many):
Corn
Broccoli
Cauliflower (rarely)
Green Beans

Even with those I rarely eat them because they aren't readily available with lunches ( I rarely make my own lunch to bring to work, usually go out to eat)

Any suggestions? I'm at around 270 lbs, would like to get to 220 or so. I need to get a plan for exercising but need to figure out the diet as well.

I can't even imagine having a list like that. I think my mother would have kicked my ass if I acted picky about eating such common and healthy foods.

Is corn a vegetable?

Maybe you should start training yourself to eat them. Start by cooking them with olive oil, salt, and a bit of cheese if you want. Then, gradually wean yourself off those things until you're eating them raw.

Vegetables are recommended for a reason. If you want to be healthy, you've got to eat healthily. If it really is that much of a problem for you, try eating them with a lot of spices/seasoning. Vegetable dishes at ethnic restaurants would be a good start to wean yourself onto them.

You've got to do it. These gimmicky weight loss diets (that you end up doing just short term) aren't healthy. You need a lifestyle change.

I guess I'm screwed then. I've been trying to eat them for years but I just can't do it. I have no idea why but I don't see it ever happening.

Instead of eating a salad try eating cooked vegetables... that way you could mask the taste you hate...

Try Chinese, Indian and Turkish cuisines... They have plenty of vegetarian options... However, most of the dishes will have onions and tomatoes...

I suppose I should add that I eat just about any fruit (well, no tomatoes 😛)

I'm not sure how those work vs vegetables in a diet though, other than the fact you're supposed to have both.

How about steak? That seems to be a pretty popular around here

On a serious note, if I were you the first thing I would do is sign up for fitday. Changing your lifestyle (which includes measuring how much you put into your body) is a lot more important then tucking in a couple of salad greens under that huge flank of meat.

What do you mean you "don't" eat them? Of course you don't, that why you're a big fatass! That's why you SHOULD eat them! Jesus H Sodapop Christ. If you're not serious enough about getting healthy the start eating veggies then you're not serious enough to lose weight and, more importantly, maintain a lower weight.

That's a sh!tty attitude for weight loss. That's why you'll always be fat. Change your attitude of get used to being overweight. Time for a reality check.

Wow, someone needs to kick your parents in teh crotch

If i ever gave that ridiculous list to my mom as a kid she would have gave me a whoopin right there and then

Atkins does not require you to eat any vegetables.

Yes it does. Green leafy vegetables are a fairly big part of that diet after the first couple of weeks. There is a lot of misinformation floating around about that diet.

I dont like anything listed in your 1st list. I do however eat a couple once there mixxed in with chinese food. Try Panda Express Fried rice since it comes with onions, carrots and peas. I know its fried, but you could try eatting this to get use to the taste.

Try to eat Greens also. There not good good, but there not nasty. Soul food ;]

I do eat Corn which is in the 2nd list.

Same here. What would the vegans eat if I ate vegetables? I'm just looking out for others!

i eat all kinds of veggies, but i also lost 85lbs in 9 months by cutting my portion size in half. i didnt have to change what i ate too much to accomplish this. exercise is key also.

that said, you really should attempt to break this mental barrier you have for that list, most on there are very good flavors and complement any meal well. youre missing out by not eating them.

You can go on a low carb diet, but just remember, you NEED fiber to some extent. Learn to like at least 1 vegetable like broccoli or green beans.

LOL. I just can't but be amazed at some of the threads that are started by our members here on Anandtech.
Entertaining indeed!

Here's something I'd recommend you to do.

What is the first error that people on diet do? They stop eating what they like. It makes the diet much much more hard to follow. With this diet, you still eat what you like, but less. It makes the diet easier and you can achieve your goal.

You do that on a period of 2 weeks, then the other 2 weeks, you eat normally (I mean by normally not a "All you can eat buffet"). The more important thing is "No Diets on weekends!!!", once again, don't blow your diet up by eating like a pig in the weekends.

Breakfast: Protein shake with milk (1 scoop) - ~250 calories, 30g Proteins
Snack: 250ml of milk - ~125 calories, 10g proteins
Diner: Protein Shake with milk (1 scoop) - ~250 calories, 30g proteins
Afternoon snack: 250ml of milk - ~125 calories, 10g proteins
Super: Anything you would normally eat - ~1000 calories, 40-50g proteins
Only if you want, 1 or 2h before you go to bed: Protein Shake with milk, 30g proteins

Total calories for your day: 1750 calories, ~150g proteins

It sucks, it's not as good as real meals, but you will loose weight.

Keep us posted.

Arg, I don't know what I'd do on your diet. No pizza (tomatoes, onions, and peppers)? No tacos (all of the above)? No red pasta sauce (tomatoes, onions, and peppers)? You really cut out some of the most popular foods of all time. No salsa? No ketchup?

There are a few important keys:
1) The good part of veggies is that they are high on fiber and nutrients. To lose weight, you really need fiber.

2) Veggies tend to taste awful, BUT, with some good spices/herbs you can make them taste wonderful. Find some spice blends you like and you'll like the veggies when they are cooked with those spices.

3) I agree with you on the mushrooms though, they taste like you are eating a pile of soil.

4) You can get by it and eat them anyways. Even though I hate mushrooms, I cook with them and eat them because my guests like them.

Strictly speaking, you don't need to eat vegetables to lose fat. As long as the amount of calories you burn in one day exceeds the number you consume, you will lose weight, regardless of the source of those calories.

Vegetables have other important health benefits, however.
