Are there any developers out there still making 2d games?

Titles say it all. What's your favorite 2d games? Are any new ones under development?

This post was inspired by the game Maple Story, it's a free online game that graphically blew my socks off. I would love to see developers use some of the new hardware out there to make more games like this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MapleStory

Does ascii count as 2d? Dwarf Fortress was the last 2d game I've played.

Guilty Gear is also an amazing 2d fighting series, showing just how good the artwork can be.

New Super Mario Brothers was 2d perfection.

Ragnarok Battle Online and Offline is another 2d game. The offline version is awesome and apparently newgrounds has a flash version now too.

Every Extend 2 for the PC. Completely free and the guy who developed it actually has a couple other amusing 2D games, although I wasn't able to get some of his games because I had to register for some Japanese freeware site and I couldn't get the registration to finish for some reason :(. Note that this game was also made into a PSP game called Every Extend Extra.

I wrote a 2D physics engine in Java for this purpose, but I never got round to making any games with it. It's not perfect yet anyway - the rigid body dynamics is OK, but the particle system needs work, and there are occasional glitches like polygon corners that get stuck together. If I ever finish it I could do things usually only seen in 3D rendered games - like rag doll bodies, accurate explosions, etc, right in the web browser.

Very small chance of ever making money out of something like that though, so it will probably never see the light of day.

The last 2d game I played was Duke Nukem Manhatten project, just a few years ago. That was a cool game.

Starcraft was the last 2d game i played.

I know the futures 3d and all, but personally fun makes a game, not graphics so i believe any new 2d game would be great but wouldnt sell as gamers magazines and review sites would batter it with "archaic graphics, my dogs dinner looks better" etc etc and people wouldnt buy it. Shame really.

Baldur's Gate II was the latest one I've played, but Marathon 2: Durandal and Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny were definitely the greatest.

The original Civilization. It's still the best game I've ever played in any number of dimensions. (No, I'm not a big gamer :p)

I played Civ 1 on the Atari ST many moons ago but the first one I played on the PC is without doubt the best one i've ever played.
