Are there any decent credit card companies left?

Not like there were many to being with though. Am looking for any recommendations (or horror stories) on credit cards companies.

Here is my recent story that resulted in me canceling my card and seeking a new one:
Newegg purchase of $250 using a credit card that I have bought from Newegg over 20 times in the last 5 years spending over $5k total (with at least 1 transaction over $1k). This is also using the additional "Verified by Visa" password for said credit card. Ordered one of the new EVGA 460 gtx 1gb cards that I knew would go OOS fast and was able to get the order in right before it went out of stock. Checked Email next day to see that credit card fraud protection put a hold on the order. Called the credit card company and got the automated system cheerily thanking me for verifying the charge and to "contact the vendor and replace the order". The video card is now out of stock, kind of hard to replace an order on a OOS item.

Now I can understand if this was a purchase from an online vendor I have never used the card with before. Or if there was not the additional "Verified by Visa" password required or used with the transaction, but come on.

Overly diligent fraud protection is not a concern of mine.
Chase has saved me numerous times with their free and fast fraud department.

So did Visa screw you or the card issuer? The 2 are not one and the same. You can replace the card company but good luck getting rid of Visa.

It was the card issuer Chase.

This was the first time I have ever had a fraud prevention hold on the Chase credit card. Am okay with having a diligent fraud prevention system, but to flag a transaction from a company I have purchased many times before in much higher dollar amounts using additional levels of purchase verification security every time is a little overboard.

Ive never had an issue with Amex

Neither have I. I just got another card from them shipped UPS overnight, with a letter inside saying they think my card may have been compromised..and unlike Chase, they actually issued a new card with an expiration date in 2013, instead of just giving me another one that expires this year. 😛

So if someone stole your card would you still be complaining?

Someone DID still my wife's card... went to Bed Bath and Beyond and spent like 2K. They also filled up gas 2x... when they did the second my bank (backed by VISA) called me and asked where we were.

I told them I was at home then verified card was missing. I never heard anything else as ALL my funds were returned to my account.

SO If every once in a while they take a little more protection as not to lose there ass.... and mine too. I am ALL about it.

I thought it was funny when I moved to my new apartment and was buying stuff left and right. One day I spent a good $1500 on 10 random items from different websites. Later that day I bought lunch at burger king on the same card and got a fraud call asking if it was a legit purchase. Thanks for checking on that!!

That sucks, but it's a necessary evil of fraud protection. The systems wouldn't be needed if people weren't stealing identities and cards, so you can blame the worlds' criminals for it really.

Personally I have a card through citibank and I've been very happy with them. I'm a fan of their website layout and everything works great online. They have a decent rewards program that has netted me quite a lot of bestbuy gift cards. I've only been called once for fraud related issues, and that was when I used the card to buy xbox live points through the console so it looked weird in their system. I'm not even kidding when I say within 30 minutes of the purchase they were calling me.

My fave feature of citi (which I'm assuming other banks/card issuers have) is a program that generates a one time use card number tied to your account. That way you can buy stuff online without the worry that somebody has intercepted your real number, and without using paypal. Once the number is charged, that number will come back invalid and declined for any other charge afterwards. I've used it a number of times on e-retailers I wasn't too familiar with.

Had you bought BK on the card before or different buying habit?

At what part did I argue that all fraud protection mechanisms be abolished? I was arguing that they picked a transaction that was no where near out of normal for me.

They could provide no reason for doing a fraud hold on the transaction. At least that was what the rep told me when I called to cancel the card.

Saved you from what? not like you are responsible for fraudulent charges

"I knew would go OOS fast" Shi-ot, really.🙂

FIA Card services since 1986 which uses visa.

Same here... I have the Charles Schwab 2% cash back card (VISA)... i love it. I also have a bank of america card, but that goes through FIA Card Services as well...

In addition to them, American Express had always been great to me. I just couldn't pass up 2% on every purchase from schwab + monthly credits vs. yearly credits (not to mention i have a brokerage and bank account with them already)

edit:I did have an incident w/ newegg recently though. My card kept getting declined. I did have to call customer service and they took care of right away... So maybe VISA had some issues recently with newegg? This is ~1 week ago...

I've had fraud holds at one time or another on pretty much every CC i've had. I doubt switching will gain you much.

yes pretty much everyone does, i can only think of 1 time where i couldn't use it, and that was at a random resturant in the middle of nowhere

I disagree, this is another reason I was happy to move from American Express to Charles Schwab Card. Many asian markets and other ethnic places don't take Amex. Yeah it was only a handful if places, but still a minor annoyance

True it does vary from place to place and such, however 99.9% of the time anywhere i would be using a CC will take Amex

My understanding is that Amex has higher merchant fees, so a lot of small businesses can't afford to take it given its presumably lower volume than Visa/Mastercard. I still use Amex as my primary card and have a vanilla (credit union issued) Visa card for places that don't accept it -- and I can count the number of places I frequent that don't on one hand.

I disagree. I have an Amex for work (And a personal one, but I don't use it).. When I travel I routinely find places that don't take it. Its probably more like 90% take it, but its not 99.9% for sure.
