My understanding is that they won't be available until Windows Vista is released. Also, from what I've read, I can't really tell for sure if you'll just be able to buy one of these tuners, or if they'll only come as part of specially approved systems...

Now what, now that you mention it I do seem to remember reading somewhere that DCR TV Tuner cards would only be availible in approved PC's. Dang that sucks. I really hope that dosn't turn out to be true.

I think ATI's OCUR thats set to release with Vista should be fine for just any old plug and play, considering all you need is the cablecard. I doubt that selling it in "only select systems" can hold up if the drivers become publicly available(which they will), as people would just buy the system and then take out the card and sell the system on eBay. Anyways maybe thats just the hopeful voice in my head talking, because thats my biggest reason for upgrading to Vista.

Cablelabs, the ones that certify the cable cards, said a few months ago they will not certify equipment unless certain levels of drm can be garanteed. This implies the only whole systems will be cable card 2.0 certified. I hope you can pull them out but vista can easily check and if you are not compliant no tv. I am sure there will be hacks at some point but we will have to wait it out.
