Just remember: One bullet is all it takes to kill you.

So damn true. This is why I didnt want to enter the academy earlier. However, as I sit here and watch the news, the chances of someone getting kill in the line of duty is probably slimmer than me driving and getting into an accident while I'm driving my car. I spoke with my friend's sister and she said she hasnt shot anyone in her 6 yrs on duty. I also know of a friend's friend who's been serving for 2 yrs. He said life as a cop is boring at times, but it beats sitting in an office 9-5. There are some hectic times, but that's when your backup comes in.

Cops are rarely shot. They are injured/killed most often by traffic accidents.

That's why you serve in a community like mine. There's no crime (almost none), and the only people getting caught are rich asian kids in their rice rockets who drive too fast. Otherwise, everyone is back in their home by 9 and all stores are closed by then. Only pearl milk tea places/starbucks will open to 11, and I know of only 2 stores that open till 3 AM.

oops... I didnt mean to sound that way.. I apologize for my comment.
But seriously you only get 60k after five years of service? to me this only attracts people that cant get better jobs

There's more to a job than money. To me, there's is no "better job." If that means I won't be rich anytime soon, then that's fine. I'll still be happy.

And if you *really* want money in law enforcement, just do a sh!tload of overtime. There are guys on my dept. who've doubled their salary because of all the OT they put in.

Doesn't anyone monitor their OT? Doesn't that affect your department's budget?

I agree there is more to a job than money, but seriously how can you live in NYC making 30-40k a year!?!?! even 60k a year is a strecth if you want to support a family

Wow, i thought the amount they were getting paid was horible, but after a few years they are making a very nice living. I wonder if they can work some other part time job during their retirement?

The OT will get paid out no matter who takes it. There's ALWAYS OT available. A lot of the time the OT is contracted out, because arenas need traffic direction or additional security, so the arena pays the city and the city pays the officer. Sometimes the OT is grant-funded, so it's all paid in cash. There's airport security everyday, too.

That's really common. If you get on early enough you can retire in your mid-40s and start a new career while collecting your pension.
