Are there any cops?

As much as I hate SOME cops who are ignorant and cocky, I wouldnt mind becoming one. The pay is good and there's always room for advancement. Besides being able to do certain things civilians can't do, I wouldnt mind serving my community. I think my city needs more cops who aren't stupid and arrogant as some of the ones I've met on the streets. I swear, some of these cops, you wonder how they even became cops. However, I shouldnt be bashing them since they do protect and serve our communities, but I'll be damn if I run into anymore a$$holes who abuse their powers.

Anyways, I guess my question is, how hard is training? Where I live, they pay you during your training in the academy. The salary is much more than what I make now (yea I'm a poor sucker making $31k a year administering 12 freaking servers)! After your first year, you get a pay raise and I think it's in the low 40s.

My desire to become a cop isnt based on money, but more on me needing a job that doesnt require me to be stuck in an office 8-4 doing nothing all day but stare at my computer screen. I enjoy being around ppl and wouldnt mind serving my community.

Theres quite a few cops around ATOT.

bradruth comes to mind, theres a few others i can remember

send him a PM

Just minutes from where I live, cops are starting in the high 40s. One has to live in this particular city though. Hmmm...

Anyways, I'm gonna think this over. My friend got as far as the test and never went back. He decided the time wasnt right. He would go back in if I decided to go for it. However, I'm not sure if we would even become partners. I wouldnt mind going through the whole process with him and then become partners on the streets.

That's cool man, go for it. Don't regret it for the next few years messing with those lame servers wondering what would have happened if you would have joined the force when you wanted to.

The problem is your boss, and your boss's boss, etc, will be 'stupid and arrogant' b/c they're all the same breed. There are exceptions, and I hope you are under those exceptions. Good luck!

Oh yeah, every city has cops that get a little too edgy and blame the world's strife on the 16 year-old with a joint in his shirt. FU APD.

Just remember: One bullet is all it takes to kill you.

So damn true. This is why I didnt want to enter the academy earlier. However, as I sit here and watch the news, the chances of someone getting kill in the line of duty is probably slimmer than me driving and getting into an accident while I'm driving my car. I spoke with my friend's sister and she said she hasnt shot anyone in her 6 yrs on duty. I also know of a friend's friend who's been serving for 2 yrs. He said life as a cop is boring at times, but it beats sitting in an office 9-5. There are some hectic times, but that's when your backup comes in.

Cops are rarely shot. They are injured/killed most often by traffic accidents.

I'm sure if you became a cop, your opinion of cops would change drastically. I bet you'd find most are actually good people. 😉

yea ... i didnt mean ALL cops. I noticed many cops in my neighborhood are rather young. Some may actually be younger than me.

Someone ask bradruth how much his department pays him. 😛 😀 😉

Washing machine, later.

Not sure what the starting salary is where you live but here in NYC its been lowered to 25K which is a damn joke.

Good for you if you want to be a cop and serve your community. I wouldn't mind being one myself but I'm a bit out of shape, weak and have crappy vision. I could only imagine what would happen if I had a gun in my hand..

Yea.. it does rise dramatically though. Some will be turned off by the low starting pay however if they don't know the salary increases as time passes. NYPD pay from what I hear is still very low compared to the pay in other states..even lower compared to officers in Long Island.

There's more to a job than money. To me, there's is no "better job." If that means I won't be rich anytime soon, then that's fine. I'll still be happy.

And if you *really* want money in law enforcement, just do a sh!tload of overtime. There are guys on my dept. who've doubled their salary because of all the OT they put in.
