I called my insurance agent for a quote on an Infiniti Q45. She said it was classed as a performance vehicle, but that there were no grades of performance vehicles. In otherwords a Q45 vs a TT Supra would be roughly the same premium over a non high performance vehicle.

My question:

Is there a list anywhere of what the insurance company's view as "performance vehicles?"

If there is, I wouldn't have to call my agent for every car I consider.

why not ask her for a list? Her list is going to be more accurate than any list you find here.

She has to run a vehicle through her system before it comes up flagged as high performance, she doesn't have a list either.

It would be safe to assume any vehicle making over 300hp is high performance :) Anything turbo or blown too.

Try calling another agent. The lists should pretty much be the same for all insurance co's. I know my motorcycle agent had a list..I've seen it and Triumphs ain't on it. hehe.

A lot of it depends entirely upon the insurance company. There are several things that greatly impact insurance rates though -

1. Number of doors and seats - 2 doors + 2 seats = RAPE ME. 4 doors + 4 seats = Much cheaper.
2. Horsepower - The higher the HP in the car, the higher the premium
3. Displacement, same as hp
4. Cost of replacement - if you have a high price vehcile, then your premiums will reflect it

Those are some of the biggies. The Q45 has a V8 and is RWD isn't it?

Generally any of these are "high performance"

Turbo - even if its 3PSI, it's still considered high performance
SuperCharged - This includes a lot of those Pontiacs with superchargers
2 door with 250+ HP
Is your car made by one of these manufactureres? Chances it has high insurance costs: Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and many more I don't feel like typing.

I see. Well, Maybe we can come up with a list of cars that are ambiguous. I mean, you know a Viper, 'Vette, Camaro, Mustang are going to be high performance. A Camry, accord, civic, Cavalier are not. So, what are some iffys?

Maxima, Monte Carlo, 3-series, sh!t I don't know how they classify most of the sport sedans.

Better yet, why don't you give her a list of ALL the cars you are considering and have her check them all at once. If the list isn't too long, that is.

Yes, the Q45 has a 4.5L V8 (278 HP/292 lb/ft). But it's a 4-door, & a large vehicle. So I was hoping it'd slip by unnoticed.

:D

If I don't have to have comprehensive insurance for it, I can afford the insurance (it's only a 10-20% premium over what I pay now, $250-$500 a year more). But if I have to have comprehensive it'll be around $5,500 a year. But then again even a Civic comprehensive would be $4,800.

I don't want to waste her time with a list, she has to do a full quote to find out, which takes her 5+ minutes apiece.

Some are obvious (Mustang, Camaro, Eclipse turbo, etc), some are questionable (Prelude, Celica). I asked if there was a set of specs (HP, torque, etc.), but she didn't have an answer for me.

Damn, being young is suck. I pay $1200/yr for two cars, and one is VERY high performance, comp for both, too.

Being young + not the best driving record = four years in a federal pound me in the ass prison... err... high insurance premiums.

One at-fault wreck in Dec 99, one ticket (72/55) in Dec 00 + '89 Honda Accord coupe = $2,400 a year insurance, liability only.

Blech.

Ummm...Audi A4 2.8? 4-door maxima? Unfortunately, you're pretty much boned by being under 25 (you are, right? I seem to recall your personal info from various posts). You will get a big drop in rates once you turn 25 and another if/when you get married. I pay about $1050/year for two admittedly vanilla cars (sentra and altima). Was quoted $1150/year for a 3rd gen RX7, but decided not to buy it.

<Edit> An early 90's Maxima might be your best bet. Plenty fast, comfy, handles pretty well if you get an SE and might slip under the insurance radar. I was in your situation for a few years until the points came off. Nothing like hauling ass around what you think is some slow-moving redneck in a truck up in the N GA mountains and realizing as you cross the double yellow at roughly 80 that it's a DNR ranger and he's pulling your ass over.:| </Edit>

If the vehicle is on loan from a bank or the dealer, then you are required by law to have full coverage on the car.

Also, I can't believe your rates

I pay ~$1,000 a year on a '97 Monte Carlo Z34 and a '95 VW GTI VR6, both with full coverage. I'm neither 25 nor married, so I'm still in the bend me over a barrel bracket as well.
