Are there any cities within a two hour drive of Boston that are nice?

My buddy lives in Nashua, NH and commutes to Boston. I've never been there, but from his description it seems like a nice place. It's much cheaper as well.

Have you looked into upstate NY like from Albany south? I know it's not coastal but the housing prices aren't bad and depending where you are the time to get to Boston would be close to 2 hours...

Speed

Insane3d lives in NH, southern near manchester, like an hour from Boston on a good day according to him, Manchester is a great area, house prices shouldent be TOO bad there, remember anything on the cost is gonna cost you liek 2x what it should, you shoudl talk to him

southern maine is great in that area near portsmith NH, economy isnt bad there as its the more populated area

Two hours (one way) is an absurdly long commute for the East Coast. If you really want to drive that much, you could live in middle/western Mass (pretty cheap), all of eastern or central CT and southern NH, possibly southern VT.

Remember that a two hour good weather commute will turn into a hellishly long nightmare during a snowstorm. I live in CT and have a half hour commute that has taken as long as three hours.

I've said I'm NOT commuting two hours 😛 I want that proximity singularly for the ability to get to the airport without a long drive. That's why I would not in fact work in Boston. I want it merely for its airport, when I need it.

OK I've been looking now in Southern Maine, and it seems that $300k will get a very respectable house: new build, three bedroom, two car garage, etc. One I found was about 65 miles from Boston, which isn't bad. Really though I don't treasure the idea of commuting to boston, because one way or the other it will be either too expensive (for a house), or too long a drive. Are there any cities in southern maine or any areas like that that don't have a crappy economy? I suppose that finding a house is really just the matter of plugging a city into a real estate search, but getting an idea on local economy is more difficult...

Keep in mind that Mrs Skoorb will make killer money. RN's are in HUGE demand here and their union, the MNA is quite powerful.

Go west young man.

The local 'burbs like Marlboro are good, but apparently you are willing to drive. Towns past Worcester might be your best bet.

NYC.

if you look out in the suburbs, there are plenty of semi-reasonable houses/apartments that won't cost an arm and a leg (at least not relative to the money you'd be making... seems like a saf bet to assume that a tech job in NYC will pay significantly more than a tech job in bumblefck NH).

my uncle lives in Nashua... it's an awful place, filled with hicks, rednecks, and canuks.

I currently live in Blackstone, MA (just over the northern RI border) and will be moving to Milford, MA (a bit more north) at the end of the month.

My current house is a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage, just over an acre, awesome condition, 1920 or so sq feet of living space (including finished basement and family room addition) and sold for $362k.

My new house is a 4 bedroom, 2 car garage, 1.5 acres, new construction, 2600 sq feet living space, full basement and I purchased for just over $470k with upgrades.

Houses are expensive around here, no doubt about it, but as far as I can tell the job market is good if you put some effort into it. I've easily slipped from job to job in the past, and currently run my own IT business, so can't say I've ever had to hit the job market. However, I see what's around and if you're good you can get a good job. I do have a couple buddies unemployed, but to be honest they sit on their asses all day and complain instead of hitting the concrete.

Good luck.

Northampton is very pretty and only 45 min. away, rent a canoe/kayak and paddle to the island in the middle of the lake there for a picnic. 🙂

Nashua sucks, but not because of the hicks, rednecks, and canuks.

It's because of the property taxes, rising housing costs, traffic and idiot drivers.

I live in Maine, and I'd look to the north side of town for sure. Nh or southern maine. There is a train now that runs to boston.

Have you considered flying out of Providence instead of Boston? I perfer TF Green airport because it's so much easier to deal with getting to and from versus going through Logan.

There is a perfectly good airport in Manchester. I flew out of it many times. The fares are better. Boston is a nightmare many days.

You have no idea what you are in for by moving to the northeast. 300k is a good starter home, but other costs are higher too.

Figure your total costs of living will double, maybe more.

Southern NH can be nice, depending on where you live. Manchester is becoming a bit of a sh!thole, Manchvegas as we call it up here 😉 , and Nashua is becoming that way too. There are some nicer parts of Nashua and Manchester, but you are much better off in one of the smaller surrounding towns. I live in Merrimack, which is about halfway between Manchester and Nashua, and it's very nice. It's right on the highway, so you are never more than about 5 minutes to pick it up from most parts.

Milford is also a nice town, on the outskirts of Nashua. Also some nice places like Bedford, Amherst, and Hollis. On the upside, the tax situation is very nice. We have no sales tax or state income tax. We basically just have property taxes, and room and meals (8%). On the downside, the property values have skyrocketed in the past 5 - 10 years.

I live in a 2 bedroom condo with three floors (upstairs, ground floor, basement), and when it was bought about 12 years ago, it was $55K....it's value now is somewhere around $150K. They also cranked the taxes in this town the last few years because they are building a new school.

As for airports, I work at a hotel, and most people that come into the area tend to because they prefer the Manchester airport. It's a much nicer, although smaller airport, and they almost never close down...even when we get 20"+ of snow...unlike Logan. They are making it bigger all the time too.

A bit farther north, is Concord. It's probably a bit on the edge of your two hour commute, but it should be only about 1 hour, 30 minutes on a normal day.

Good luck...

Well considering he is a Canuk living in Alabama, he's probably use to hicks and rednecks and should fit in nicely.

the part out where my father was located seemed nice, marlboro area. where DEC used to be headquartered.

SouthWest Airlines serves both Manchester (NH) and Providence (RI).

Fairly frequent flights and much cheaper than the big boys.

Keep the ideas coming 😀

Flying I need a pretty big hub, because it needs consistent flights to Halifax, NS, and also to St. John's, NL. I know that Boston services these frequently, as does Newark.

Check out the connections between Hartford and Canada

Or just get a pilot's license and take a quick hop ovre the border.

Newark should not be even considered as a origination point.

Best thing would be to use Expedia to determine potential flighs from the area airports to your Canadian destinations.

Also, check on ferry schedules across the Bay of Fundy.
