Are there 6-bit S-IPS panels?

According to http://www.computerbase.de/art...est_lg_flatron_l1710b/ the LG 1710b is S-IPS correct? My German ain't that great :)

When I look on the LG website it says 16.2million colours which means 6-bit with dithering right?

The viewing angles are much better than it would be on a TN I think as I don't really lose the picture or change colours when I switch to a different angle.

So...is it possible? Does this monitor have an S-IPS panel? It was released way back in 2004 I think.

How do I check whether mine is a TN panel? I tried looking at it from extreme angles and the colours don't change and I can stll see the picture very well. I thought those were the trademarks of TN panels.

Actually, 16.2 million is 8-bit. It's when you see 16.7 million colors that you usually have a 6-bit panel that uses dithering.

Okay I just checked the extreme viewing angle from the BOTTOM (ie. looking up at the LCD screen from below) and there I did see the colour change. I thought this was supposed to happen from all angles no? There's no colour change at all from any other angle (ie. top, or from the side). So is this a TN for sure then?

There is a change in the image, or you're just not noticing it. If it inverts when you look from the bottom, then it's definitely a TN. If it's not inverting then it's some other tech.

From other angles the change won't be significant but it's enough to annoy some people. The bottom angle is the only one that inverts.

Inverts as in the colours invert? I keep checking over and over again but there is absolutely no colour change except when looking from the bottom. Not even a tiny hint of it.

forget about whether its s-ips or tn or made of horse crap. as long as it looks good to YOU don't worry about it..

as a side note tn panels do have color change looking from top and side. but you have to go to quite extreme angles.

Lol, I'm gonna sell it soon so I'd like to know which panel it uses in case someone asks. I've ordered the BenQ FP241VW to replace it.

Just so you know what to look for...

Avg. TN: http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/...35/2110/35_228_108.jpg (notice the inverted, very ugly, bottom image)
Avg. VA: http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/...s/41/730/41_67_108.jpg (good but a little washout and color shift)
Avg. IPS: http://img1.lesnumeriques.com/...52/1606/52_149_108.jpg (pretty much nothing at all, just a tad darker)

Say you think it's a VA or IPS...

Check this image: http://lcdresource.com/images/mg-darktest.jpg

If it gets brighter by any noticeable amount from a different horizontal angle, then it's a VA. If not (or if it gets slightly darker), it's an IPS. The walls will wash out a bit on a VA, and on an IPS the black will tend to turn a little violet. Pretty much, if you notice any change at all from going from one horizontal extreme to another, it's a VA. With an IPS you notice probably nothing but a slight violet darkening.

THanks so much for the pics. Well, I guess this is a TN then because it looks inverted like that pic. THanks for your help.
