[Seriously, post some links to back up your claims:]

I have. Read back. The benchmarks that take only FPS into account miss a lot in terms of smoothness and playability. And even in the FPS benchies the X2 either did very slightly worse, or in some cases even or better than faster single core chips.

It's the future. It is unavoidable.

AthlonX2 3800+ performs WORSE than Athlon64 3800+ in games:

THANK YOU for setting it straight. At the moment, games as a whole don't benefit from dual core. Give it some time and you bet they will, just not yet. Like I said earlier, when it is a matter of just games at this point single-core is better 'cause you get the faster MHz which games need. Once they become multi-threaded, then the tables will turn. But only then.

I'm doing a research project on all this stuff for a class so I've been digging into this a lot more lately :)

The benchmarks on that page are at low resolutions, probably to keep the video card from being the bottleneck. They seem to show about a 10% performance advantage to the single-core 3800+.

1) their test setups do not seem to have any real-life stuff like security software, IM clients, P2P downloading tasks, etc.

2) can I notice a 10% difference in average framerate? probably not

3) can I notice the time of a formerly-3-hour encoding job being cut in half? Ohhh yes :D (edit: reworded this for clarity)

4) can I notice a night-and-day difference in how smoothly games run and how fast maps load if I decide to play some games while running an encoding job in the background for hours and hours? I'd certainly expect to, yes (haven't tried games on my X2, it being an office dweller, but Kyle of [ H ] says it's "the holy grail")

Athlon Dual Core ? (75% Utilization First Pass ? 100% Second Pass) AMD CS:S play showed same exact CS:S game play as Intel. Could not tell computer is encoding video. Smooth as butter, very playable and enjoyable.
Athlon Single Core ? Extremely Long load time. So long you would miss the first round at map change. Had two instances where the game never loaded till encode was done. Once in the game, the map was very choppy and simply unplayable. A much worse experience than Intel single core play.
Which one would you rather have? Maybe the X2 pricing will come down and make this choice easier, but it's easy enough for me.

Just some food for thought there.

When I read a statement like this, it makes me want to say "So, what single core processor are you stuck with?"

;)

I agree with the original statement and I am stuck with a dual core processor looking to downgrade. nough said. You can't upgrade for future games. If your looking to buy an X2 and only planning on playing games on it, well you will be wasting a lot of money or Performance compared to a simlar speed single core processor.
