Are the TI-86s still the best for calculus?

84+ special edition. I don't like the 86 much. 89/92 are nice, but are computer algebra based, and aren't allowed on any tests by my instructor.

TI-89 for sure if you're allowed to use it. Much easier to use than previous TI models.

Yeah i had and loved a TI-89..but it's not allowed. Those ti-84s look sweet tho.

It's nice when you get past the three semesters of calculus and you're allowed to use just about anything.

Ti-86 i have been using for years and its awesome. The conversion algorhythm comes in quite handy for units. Also, Poly function is handy for quick quadratic equations. Anthing that the Ti-89 has over the 86, id rather use Maple or Matlab since these programs handle vector/multivariable calculus better and with a nicer image.

oh, this reminds me, i've got an 89 someone gave me that has a broken screen, but i don't have anything to get the back off, could i get a new screen and replace it after i get something to get the back off? when you turn it on, you can see part of the menu, but theres a crack in the screen so not much is visible, so i know it works, but its jsut the screen

Well since the 89's do symbolic integration, it makes sense that they would be banned in a calculus class. I have the 86 cuz it was the same calculator my calculus teacher used. So she would teach our class alot of quick shortcuts and stuff on how ot use the caluclator.

I've never been allowed to use a calculator on a math test in college yet. Lucky bastards.

My 89 is great for working on homework though. :thumbsup:

Ti-86 is a great calulator... definitely better than an 83 or 83-plus. I haven't used the new 84, so I can't comment on that. However, I much prefer the "higher rez" screen of the 86. Which reminds me... I have an old 86 that I need to sell. Once you go 89, you never go back

I was allowed to use my TI-89 in class, just not on tests. But then, I wasn't allwoed to use any calculators at all on tests.

TI-86 = Gameboy CPu based. I had one that was stolen . I had the highest score in tetris too.

ti89s are AWESOME for calc. you can do anything imaginable. yes, you better make sure your instructor allows it. because itll become a crutch when you do integrals/differentials/limits/etc.
