In one "vacation" episode, they did have a map of the 50 states and stated they were NOT welcome in most of them (not including their home state).

I imagine it could be done by the process of elimination . . .

<< << I thought one recent episode acknowledged the fan's quandry as to where the Simpsons lived and said there are already enough clues to figure it out. >> >>

Easy! they live in fantasy land 😉

<< The Simpson's Springfield is:

*Within walking distance to the desert
*A new england port town
*Driving distance to New York
*Driving distance to Tenn
>>

EVERYwhere is walking distance if you have the time (except from an Island so Hawaii is out and we already know they vacationed there).
EVERYWHERE is driving distance to New York or Tenn (again, except from Hawaii)

OK, let me make that more clear... I mean within a day's walking distance or a day's drive. When Homer wacks out on chili, AND when Marge does her Thelma and Louise thing, they end up in the desert right outside of town. A desert that Wiggum patrols, no less.

People, the answer is obvious: Springfield is "anytown" USA. It is not in any one state. This makes the show MUCH more fun because they are not forced to conform the town to any one standard. They can morph it into anything or anywhere they need it to be.

"this was the worst school in massachusettes until they moved it here"
"so now are banned from florida, new york and (the dakota with mount rushmore)"
it has a port
it's not New York
it's not close to Illonois (homer points to apu "we're over here" with his finger on Chicago then lisa says "that's nowhere near where we are")

pfffft i dunno

I believe the show's writers have a surprise for you.

As to getting to the desert . . . there is a lot of desert in the USA . . . (no, NOT Cali - deserts, ports, 2000+ McDs) :Q

It has to be some place that snows because Homer was Mr. Plow the snow plower.

<<an inside wink at shows like the Brady Bunch which never told you which state the Brady's resided. >>

Nope, in the Brady Bunch movie, you find out they're in LA, California.

It's kinda scary . . . could it be California?

It snows in places, is near the desert, a port and has buco MacDs.

Anyone care to rule it out?

A surprise for me? I'll put money on that.

from episode "lisa the treehugger", -
a wonderful view can be had from a high branch in Springfield! From her perch, Lisa can see the Statue of Liberty, The Gateway Arch and the Eiffel Tower.

Of course, Lisa is the most farsighted of the Simpsons.

😀

And you can see all of these "landmarks" in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The answer is Missouri....

in the 2 area code episode (new springfield vs. olde springfield) the 2 area codes are 636 and 939

939 is not in service...636 is Missouri

problem solved.
